Ska Skank Redemption Wicked Bees Review

Hit’N’Run is the first track on the Wicked Bees EP, and long-time ska listeners will be able to pick out Mighty Mighty Bosstones, early No Doubt, and The Insyderz in Ska Skank Redemption’s overall sound. The production of this release allows the instrumentation to shine as brightly as the inimitable vocals, ensuring that an effort like Sheila could easily make it onto rock radio. Sheila combines elements as disparate as Sublime and 311 with Goldfinger and Less Than Jake.


The infectious nature of the The Aquabats comes through during the hump track, Age Like Wine. A warm horn and a strong narrative fuels the track, while the ropey bass and punctual percussion provides a fullness and complexity that will stick with listeners long after the CD has ceased. Of the five tracks on Wicked Bees, I feel that Age Like Wine possesses the greatest allure. Capped off by a sizzling horn solo, this song speeds up and rides high through its conclusion. Minnesota and Christine showcase the never say die spirit of Ska Skank Redemption; they are on, no matter where on their EP they may be.


The Wicked Bees EP is a rare example of a short-form release that provides listeners with a solid sense of what the band is influenced by and where they may ultimately go on a full length. CHAD KICHULA'S LATEST SINGLE "ME THIS TIME"

  In a harp-driven, foot-tapping ode to Steve Earle and classic Americana, singer/songwriter Chad Kichula releases one of the most upbeat tracks from his latest LP The Whale’s Back with “Me This Time.” The track is the perfect accompaniment to a beer after work and It stands to reason, because unlike so many hard-bitten crooners who sing about manual labor and strife, alt-country singer-songwriter Chad Kichula practices what he pens. By day, Kichula works full-time cutting and pruning trees as the owner of a forestry company. By night, he writes haunting, toe-tapping anthems in the vein of his heroes Springsteen and Steve Earle. “The Whale’s Back”, the debut single from his forthcoming album The Whale’s Back (available Sept 10) is a shambling, ragged ditty, with dueling electric guitar, harmonica, and upbeat spirit lifting the track far above standard, melancholy alt-country fare. The accompanying video, with dazzling animation recalling classic videos by Gorillaz, serves as the perfect visual component to the track.

It took time for Kichula to learn to balance his passion with paying the bills. Having written and recorded music since 1999, it was not until Chad sold his truck in 2005 to pay for his debut album, that he was able to get his music out to the masses. Chad’s self-titled debut was an Americana/Roots-Rock album that showcased his development as a songwriter. Songs like “Sierra Leone” showed he could craft lyrics and tell a story—just as his inspirations Springsteen and Earle had.


After a lengthy break, Kichula came back with Killer in early January 2011, and it took almost two years to complete. Choosing not to record in a studio, Kichula and his co-producer Matt Kaip (Chad Kichula, and Better in the Morning) removed restrictions, allowing them room to experiment. The result captures raw performances and their most creative productions to date.


Harnessing that creativity, The Whale’s Back sessions began in 2012.  With a busier schedule than that of his bandmates, the process took a while to complete. Although Kichula’s previous releases have all had elements of country music, The Whale’s Back will be his debut, strictly alt-country album. Although Kichula is still working a very physical and demanding job to support his music, he has no complaints. It seems like a way of life after all these years, the working side and the creative side combining to make the best and strongest artist possible.

Julian Temple Band Upsidedownbackwards CD Review

 


My Heart immediately tattoos a rhythm on listeners that lingers long after the track has ceased. The fullness that this track has is utterly surprising – the guitar, drums, and soulful vocals make this a home run. Dark Bar goes off in a completely different direction, as the slower and more brooding feel of this track takes upon hints of Blues Traveler, Dave Matthews Band, and Barenaked Ladies. I feel that the cosy production of Upsidedownbackwards makes this into a must-have album along the smart composition and sheer array of styles and overall sounds that the Julian Temple Band adopt during this release.


Bottle of God signals the end of the first half of this CD, and the rich alternative setting crafted by the band will keep listeners focused in to the second half. Create a Desolation and Bath Salts combine to create substantial momentum for the Julian Temple Band; taken together, these tracks make the middle of Upsidedownbackwards light and airy. Emboldened by these cuts, listeners will be album to take on increasingly complex efforts like Devil on the Other.


Devil on the Other, Upsidedownbackwards’ penultimate track, utilizes interesting time signatures. Instead of standing apart from the bulk of tracks on the CD because of this quality, Devil on the Other fits in perfectly – the Julian Temple Band can even challenge conceptions of what is “good” in music without breaking up the cohesion of the release. The allure of the Julian Temple Band is in their palette – the band can turn on a dime and create a track that has no common referent anywhere else on Upsidedownbackwards. Taken together, this album is a must-hear (and a must-have).

Her Bed of Thorns Alive CD Review

 


Her Bed of Thorns come out of the gates on Alive with some of the most furious hard rock / metal that we have heard this year. There clear and concise style of the band will bludgeon listeners over the head and take them for a ride. Bad Girl continues with this trend, allowing the band’s instrumentation to shine. Whether it is the splashy drums, shredding guitars, or the dynamic that is created by these constituent elements, fans will be able to find something that they will absolutely love. Her Bed of Thorns take on equal parts Machine Head, Sepultura, Five Finger Death Punch, and even more melodic acts (Stone Sour, Corrosion of Conformity) , all while imbuing each cut on Alive with their own inimitable style.


The band is deceptive on this album; while the tracks feel straightforward, there is a much more complex sound that is bubbling through at each juncture. Couple this deep sound with all-star production, and what listeners will hear on Alive is something that is definitely ready for rock rotation.


Help Me shatters the belief that the chaff is placed on the final half of the disc; this late-CD effort slows things up. The emotionality that is present on Help Me is reminiscent of “And Justice for All…”-era Metallica or even “Silent Lucidity”-type Queensryche. The first vocals happen seventy-five seconds into this effort, but the narration provided by the guitar tells just as much of a story as the tortured Alice in Chains-esque vocals here. Her Bed of Thorns creates an alluring album that will have listeners on the edges of their seats from the beginnings of Alive until the end of Wreckless.

SUTURE: Re-recorded Version of "Carnivorous Urge to Kill" Out Now




The newly re-recorded version of  “Carnivorous Urge to Kill,” the long out-of-print debut album from Louisiana brutalists SUTURE, is out now on Comatose Music.

Originally released in 2002, the re-recording coincides with renewed interest in the band and a growing interest in the early material. SUTURE recently assembled their original lineup and entered the studio to re-record this entire album, along with a couple bonus tracks from the band’s early years. The new recording of SUTURE’s debut album will allow death metal fans to now fully appreciate these songs and hear them how they were meant to be heard in the first place. The album now features amazing guest guitar solos by James Murphy (DEATH, OBITUARY, DISINCARNATE), Rick Rozz (DEATH, MASSACRE) and Jim Nickles (ex-MALEVOLENT CREATION), plus all new artwork that more closely conveys the imagery that SUTURE originally conceived for this release.

Treasure Guards DVD Review

 


Treasure Guards is a tremendously interesting film, uniting beautiful locales (the film is set in Jordan, with a cast that meshes well together. The titular treasure is the Seal of Solomon, which was provided to Solomon by God himself. Treasure Guards stars Anna Friel as Victoria, the archaeologist (Land of the Lost, Limitless) and Raoul Bova as Angelo, under employ to the Vatican (Under the Tuscan Sun, The Tourist); the film is rounded out through the inclusion of Andre Jacobs as Teddy Carter (Black Sails, Black Venus) and Volker Bruch (The Reader, Tatort). When the supposed location of Solomon’s riches are learned, there is a massive expedition by various forces (including Teddy, Victoria’s ex-husband) to be the first there and reap the divinely-inspired goods. The film does a great job in existing at the intersection of the thriller, drama, and action genres; fans of a wide array of films will be able to appreciate the story that is being told in Treasure Guards. I feel that there is considerable space available for Iain B. MacDonald to expand upon the Treasure Guards brand in the years to come; as long as one continues to have the solid dynamic between Victoria and Angelo, there could be a number of additional films.

Loud City Song has a new album - Horns Surrounding Me - out now

Ahead of her upcoming month-long European tour, Julia Holter has today shared the new video for Loud City Song highlight “Horns Surrounding Me”. Directed by Montreal-based Angus Borsos and based on a concept by Ramona Gonzalez, AKA Nite Jewel, the video follows previous interpretations of the much-celebrated album’s songs by visual artists Rick Bahto (“World”), Yelena Zhelezov (“In The Green Wild”), and Eugene Kotlayrenko. This film was shot by Randy Sterling Hunter in Vienna, Austria; Trincomalee, Sri Lanka; and Berlin, Germany, in mid-2013. “Points of Light” is taken from Pillars and Tongues’ full-length, END-DANCES (Out now on Empty Cellar Records).


“Crowley was long interested in the creative potentials of humans — and how through magick, those potentials could be realized. in our contemporary situation, the prevalence of irony and mimicry has obscured this process. Often, people will make a film about magick. My aim is not to make films about magick, but to make magick films. There is a difference, and an important one at that. My generation seems quite interested in the psychedelic culture of the 1960s. This fascination makes it difficult to see that, beginning before the ’60s but peaking towards the end of the decade, the psychedelic pioneers were not interested in psychedelia, they were psychedelic. They didn’t do psychedelic things, they lived psychedelically.


I choose my collaborations carefully, or rather I make the right collaborators appear in my life by conducting my affairs a certain way. For that reason, I’m not surprised that Mark Trecka and I crossed paths. That was inevitable because we share the same orbit on the same plane of existence. The film for “Points of Light” is not a music video for that reason. It’s a magick film. When I watch the film, I see my present, past, and future simultaneously. If that experience wasn’t possible, then it wouldn’t have been worth making. This is not a film for other people, nor are any of my other films. They are public and they exist in the world but they exist only because through making them, I am able to exist in the present, past, and future all at once.


To make an analogy, if the film was Tarot, what you see in it is the result of a 6 month long dealing of the cards. But the deck Trecka and I needed to use didn’t exist, so we brought our own into being.” –Randy Sterling Hunter, Vienna, Autumn 2013


“Randy Sterling Hunter and I were connected through our mutual friend and mutual connector, Angel Olsen. He and I connected in Vienna, talked briefly, went our separate ways, and met again some hours later, after a brief segue into sleep, starting work on the film more or less immediately.


Just as immediately, an exchange of ideas — which would present themselves as potential themes for the film — began. Something that feels profound, in a very personal way, then seemed to happen while working: we rapidly developed ideas, committed to further exploring said ideas, and then discarded such commitments and ideas. This was not an intentional process, nor was it, at least it seems to me, a matter of ambivalence. Instead, I think our collective creative energies created a sort of overflow. Each idea, each concept served to provide a sort of guidance, as they do; but more than that, each concept seemed to collapse time and intention, more like a spread of cards would. These spreads seem to me to be concealed within the work, rather than having just informed it.


My view of this film is obviously skewed by my intimate involvement in it, but I cannot shake the feeling that all of the themes and concepts which were “discarded” have informed the work in such a way that a sort of spell is cast, paralleling in experience one of the primary themes which has been concealed within the work.” –Mark Trecka, Chicago, Autumn 2013

Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas To Release Demons EP

With 2014 on its way, Detroit’s Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas are going out with a bang as they cap things off with the final dates of their first nationwide tour (check them out below) and the November 12th release of their Demons EP, which we are excited to announce will be released with the band’s new label partner Instant Records.


“Finding a creative partner is like finding any other partner in life,” Jessica explained. “You search and search, get let down, surprised, creeped out, dumped, until one day you meet that perfect match. It felt like the hunt was over when I met Richard and everyone over at Instant. My new little family couldn’t be a better fit.”


Legendary producer, songwriter and record executive Richard Gottehrer founded Instant Records in the 1970s. The label borrows its name from Gottehrer’s original production company, under which he produced artists such as Blondie, the Go-Gos, Joan Armatrading and many others. Staying true to the company’s original vision of empowering women in music, Instant Records focuses on bringing innovative female recording artists to the forefront of the music scene.


When speaking of Jessica Hernandez, Gottehrer said, “Every now and then a voice comes along that speaks directly to us through the music. I felt it the first time I heard Jessica and believe it’s only a matter of time until she touches us all.”


Comprised of five charismatic tracks, Demons highlights the raw strength of Jessica’s talent, influenced by the likes of Gogol Bordello and Tom Waits.  While the title track and “Big Town” emphasize her theatrical, borderless sound, “Caught Up” speeds things up with saucy vocals and a flirtatious beat. “Shadow Boy” is a dark, cinematic ballad that allows Jessica’s voice to truly shine, and “Picture Me With You (Carnie Threesome)” is a sultry song that rounds out the collection with its hypnotic riff and gypsy cabaret overtones. This DVD showcases a number of distinct comedians that are looking to break it big – Finesse Mitchell (SNL alumnus) shares the stage with Red Grant, Gina Yashere, Robert Powell, and Lavar Walker. No matter the sort of topics that are discussed during this DVD, viewers will be cracking up; there are takes on family life, children, dating, and a whole slew of concerns that viewers (either in the audience or watching this title from their homes) will intimately understand. Fans of ComicView will be right at home with the crew of the All Star Comedy Jam.


This DVD contains about an hour and a half worth of comedy routines, along with two special features – an All Access gives viewers some semblance of the chaos that occurs behind the curtains, while the comedy cypher showcases that each of the comedians can get down and riff nastily upon each other. Individuals that are fans of stand-up specials in the slightest would do well to find a copy of Shaquille O’Neal Presents All Star Comedy Jam Live From Atlanta. DVD copies can be located for around $14 at a variety of online and physical retailers. Neither - Desire a prerequisite for addiction Album Review

Harveyesmeit is the initial effort from Desire, and it provides listeners with a five and a half minute introduction to Neither. The track tells more in the interplay of electronic, tribal, and organic sounds than most acts can tell over the space of an album. Eumeipass  may conform to a traditional song length, but the effort stands separate from what listeners would expect. There is a recasting here of the computer era in a much more ancient tradition. Tying in quite well with the preceding effort, Eumeipass allows Neither ample opportunity to spread eir wings.  Of the initial 10 efforts on Desire…, golicksoliantoad is  one of my favorites. The overall spirit of the album is forwarded through the approximation of the organic through the electronic. I feel that the track does a great job of establishing a dark and brooding backdrop, all while providing listeners with a protagonist – the more heartbeat-like approach that is weaved through the track. The track thus assumes the role of a horror film, replete with the bad guy maintaining a close distance throughout.


For those individuals that wish to hear a complex and fulfilling sort of effort that takes upon hints of industrial, goth, and classical arrangements, Neither’s efforts can be located at eir Bandcamp. One would typically be intimidated by the sheer amount of material that is presented, but Neither is able to draw listeners in and keep them on the edges of their seats. With a different set of styles, approaches, and genres that are broached around each corner, Desire a prerequisite for addiction may just be one of the most challenging (and fulfilling) albums that we have had the chance to review. David Poe

DAVID POE, critically-acclaimed LA-based singer/songwriter/recording artist, is an extraordinary performer and a funny, intelligent, charismatic storyteller.  His songs are gems of genius and beauty.  He’s also hot as a pistol right now because of his smash hit song “Gun For a Mouth,” which he wrote for the hit ABC TV series “Nashville.”  Poe’s songs have appeared in numerous films and television shows, including The O.C., and have been recorded by the likes of Darryl Hall, Duncan Sheik, and Grace Potter.  His score for Shadowland, a touring show by the contemporary dance company Pilobolus, has been performed on every continent, including a presentation for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Poe is a composer fellow of the Sundance Institute.

Phil Roy

PHIL ROY, Award-winning Philadelphia-born singer/songwriter/guitarist/recording artist, is not only a talented and successful songwriter, he’s also a celebrated recording artist and touring performer.  Phil’s songs have been recorded by Ray Charles, Joe Cocker, The Neville Brothers, Pops Staples, & Wyclef Jean, and he’s also had his songs in hit movies like “As Good As It Gets” and “Leaving Las Vegas.”  His recording of his song “Melt” from his album “Grouchyfriendly” was named the song of the year by the Independent Music Awards, and was a staple on AAA Radio.  Phil, also a fantastic cook, operated his “I’m Not Leaving the House” tour out of his townhouse in Philadelphia with a table for sixteen, providing home-cooked food and original songs for his guest audience on a monthly basis.  Phil Roy recently relocated to Idaho with his wife, and their son Enzo was born in Boise in August.

Bill Coffey

BILL COFFEY, Boise Idaho’s favorite singer/songwriter, is originally from Ventura California, where he cut his teeth playing in bar bands and honing his songwriting craft.  He’s opened shows for the likes of Dwight Yoakam, John Hiatt, George Jones, Hal Ketchum, John Hammond and Todd Snider, and he’s a popular headliner in the clubs, festivals, and theaters of the Northwest.  His songs, at times heartbreaking, brutally honest, and profoundly wise and earnest, can also range from the pithy to the downright hilarious.  He is an avid and learned student of the great country and folk songwriters such as Buck Owens, Hank Williams, John Prine, Townes Van Zandt, and Bob Dylan, but Bill Coffey also knows how to rock.
