Prong's Ruining Lives Available May 13th on SPV/Steamhammer in North America

Ruining Lives is the follow-up to the acclaimed 2012 release Carved Into Stone and continues to show the band on an upward trajectory, proving that despite having a long, illustrious career PRONG can still make records that matter and re-invent themselves without negating their roots.

With Tommy Victor in the producer’s chair and Steve Evetts (Hatebreed, Sick Of It All, Sepultura) once again coming in to put his trademark shine on the record, Ruining Lives has turned out to be a monster of an album. From the first riff-assault of the opener “Turnover”, the album takes you on an angst-filled roller coaster ride that marries some very old school, Beg To Differ-elements with post-punk, industrial metal, hardcore thrash, all the while retaining a modern and current feel. Fans of the bands legendary, genre-defining Cleansing-era and new fans alike will be thrilled.

Tommy Victor about Ruining Lives: “This is the fastest written and recorded PRONG-album ever and it has more great songs than any previous PRONG-record. I am particularly proud of the vocal performance and I think we captured some outstanding sounds on this album. There’s a little bit of a throwback element here. Ruining Lives is almost a “Force Fed” type of song. The album is a hybrid between NY Hardcore and some very modern, song oriented work. You will find some “Rude Awakening” but also some solid, crushing riffs. I feel we have captured the best elements of PRONG on this album.

He continues, “Come To Realize” is something new – we have never approached this kind of time signature. It really is math-metal meets pure hardcore with a crazy-ass riff. What’s exciting about the whole album is you have your hooks, your riffs and something innovative that makes the album very current. This qualifies as the hybrid nature of PRONG: marrying post-punk, industrial metal, hardcore thrash and modern elements – all of that with hooks and not just a bunch of screaming.”

The new album Ruining Lives will be released now through SPV/Steamhammer in Scandinavia on April 23rd, in Germany on April 25th, in Europe on April 28th and in the US/Canada on May 13th as a limited digipak version incl. 1 bonus track and poster, as a double gatefold colored vinyl version incl. 1 bonus track and the CD in cardboard sleeve, as a standard version and download.

On April 19th PRONG will release an exclusive single for “Record Store Day” celebration with the new track “Turnover” on side A and a pig remix version of “Revenge Best Served Cold” by Raymond Watts on Side B. The single is limited to 3.000 copies and comes in a green/white marbled vinyl version. The worldwide digital release of this single is April 21st!

Skating Polly Release Video for Alabama Movies

“Wicked and hellacious” – Prefix

“thunderous ugly pop tune kicks things up a thousand notches and thrills throughout.” – Prefix

Born from an impromptu jam at a Halloween party in 2009, Skating Polly is a punk/rock/pop duo made up of stepsisters Kelli Mayo and Peyton Bighorse. On their second album Lost Wonderfuls (produced by Exene Cervenka and mixed by Flaming Lips drummer Kliph Scurlock), the Oklahoma City-based band revealed itself as a wildly vital force in the resurrection and reinvention of classic punk rock. For their newest release, Fuzz Steilacoom (out Feb. 25th), the girls traveled up to Olympia, WA and recorded at Dub Narcotic Studios with Calvin Johnson (K Records/Beat Happening).

Raised on ‘70s punk and early-‘90s alt-rock, Mayo (age 13) and Bighorse (18) mine inspiration from artists as disparate as Johnny Cash, The Ramones, NWA, Nirvana, and Bikini Kill and saturate their own songs with a raw energy reminiscent of their musical heroes. Skating Polly takes a minimalist approach to songwriting, with the two largely self-taught musicians (Bighorse plays guitar, Mayo plays a guitar/bass hybrid called a basitar, and both girls play drums and piano) crafting super-catchy melodies mainly by “messing around with our instruments and figuring out how to make cool noises,” according to Bighorse.

Along with earning the adoration of Cervenka (whom they befriended after attending one of the X singer’s 2010 solo shows and playing their demos on a cell phone), Skating Polly has found fans in Rosanne Cash and Sean Lennon, taken the stage with punk legends like Mike Watt, and opened up for such indie heavy-hitters as The Flaming Lips, Wavves, Deerhoof, Band of Horses and Kate Nash. Tapping Mayo’s dad as their tour manager, the stepsisters typically hit the road with their entire family and optimize their travel time by making up songs on their ukulele, having secret conversations in sign language, and—most recently—studying Mandarin Chinese in hopes of touring in China within the next year.

Each track on Fuzz Steilacoom retains a rich emotionalism that’s at turns brutally in-your-face (“Alabama Movies”), gut-wrenchingly tender (“Ugly”), and irresistibly fun (“Scummy Summer”). The record ends with a stunning piano ballad (“A Little Late”) that will give you chills. It will remind you that Skating Polly is not a kid band, but they remind us what it’s like to be kids.

Mayo and Bighorse are intent on ignoring what’s fashionable and staying true to their passion for challenging music with long-lasting appeal. “The musicians we’re most inspired by are the ones who keep on going and going, who devote their entire lives to coming up with new and different stuff,” says Mayo. “A lot of times at our shows people will come up to us and tell us, ‘Keep on doing what you’re doing, don’t ever stop’ and we’re just like, ‘Yeah—we weren’t planning on ever stopping.”

COMBICHRIST Releases "From My Cold Dead Hands Remixes"

Combrichrist are prepping their audience with a remix EP for the searing first single “FROM MY COLD DEAD HANDS” which will be released worldwide on February 28, 2014. Featuring remixes by Ryle, NITRO/NOISE, Darksiderz, Ginger Fish (Rob Zombie, ex-Marilyn Manson) and more (full tracklisting on left), the eight-track EP also includes a non-album song, “You Belong to None”. EBM Network has premiered the “DeathElectro Remix by Ryle” and can be heard here: soundcloud.com/electro/from-my-cold-dead-hands-by.

“I’m not a politician, and I don’t expect my politicians to make music,” Combichrist mastermind Andy LaPLegua explains. “However, people are so afraid to say what’s on their mind if it’s not PC. I believe in the rights to have guns, and I believe in personal freedom.”

Combichrist’s latest full-length We Love You is 13 tracks of relentless aggression and manic electronica. From the stuttering thump of “Every Day Is War” to the choking-on-glass/buzz-saw aggression of “Satans Propaganda” to the breakneck punk metal of “Love Is A Razorblade”, We Love You leaves you gasping for breath.

Combichrist will be touring the world in support of We Love You. The first leg features support from William Control and New Years Day and will kick off in Charlotte, NC on April 3rd. Their critically-hailed live show, last witnessed on US shores at sold out stadiums when they accompanied Rammstein on their North American tour in 2011, will be bigger and more intense than ever.

Upslope Imperial India Pale Ale

upslope_imperialIPA-270x270

The Upslope IPA is a formidable experience. The beer pours with a small head and with a ruddy reddish-brown coloration. The initial nose of the Upslope IPA is very astringent, linking together citrus notes with hints of grass. Despite a 10% ABV, the beer goes down extraordinarily easy. There is a fairly substantial hop backbone that permeates the beer at all points. What the Upslope does is push the boundaries of the IPA style into something that is absolutely approachable for individuals, no matter what beer style that they typically approach. There are hints of citrus fruit, cereal, and a strong hint of bitterness. The can comes in a fairly large format (1 pint, 3.2 fluid ounces) that will make it easy to begin, continue, and end a session.

Make sure to visit the Upslope website for more information about the whole of Upslope’s efforts and the variety of beers that they are currently canning. The Imperial IPA style will be something that a wide variety of imbibers can appreciate; look for Upslope efforts in your neck of the woods and see precisely what the company has created with this beer.

Hi-Res Beer Review

Hi-Rest pours with absolutely nothing in the way of head, along with a very bronze / gold body. The beer is effervescent, and will immediately yield a nice alcohol burn. While there are notes of hops present here, the 111 IBU level of the Hi-Res will not overwhelm the balanced nature of the effort. Hints of caramel, spice, lemon, and sweet malts can all be discerned within the initial experience with the beer. After each sip, a slight amount of sweetness takes over and allows for individuals’ palettes to be restored. As one continues to drink a Hi-Res, a more earthy and fruity set of flavors bubble to the surface. Hi-Res is an intense effort that is formidable enough to keep individuals fulfilled through the coldest nights, while refreshing enough to provide imbibers with a brief sense of the upcoming spring season.

Hi-Res is a seasonal effort from Sixpoint. Make sure to visit your local (well-stocked) beer store for a chance to purchase a 4 pack (which will likely be around $11-15 for those in the United States), and take a gander at the Sixpoint brewery website for more information about the company’s efforts.

From winning multiple awards to working with some of the most respected figures in dance music such as Diplo and Skrillex, Jack Beats’ latest offering is another master class in genre-defying.

# acoustic set, with EELS

Chelsea Wolfe is excited to announce an upcoming tour this Spring with Eels, which will take her across North America for a special acoustic set with strings. She’ll be joined on stage each night with a violin and keyboard playing new renderings of songs off her acclaimed 2013 record, Pain is Beauty, as well as favorites from the rest of her work. Wolfe has also announced an additional round of dates with Queens of the Stone Age, reuniting again with the band after a run of shows together this winter.

Watch “Feral Love” Official Video, Directed by Mark Pellington

Wolfe has had a remarkable year surrounding Pain is Beauty, including an upcoming collaborative film with prolific director Mark Pellington, Lone. Fans can get a taste of Lone by watching the official video for “Feral Love,” an excerpt from the full film and a stunning visual accompaniment to some of the themes explored on Wolfe’s record, with “nature, sexuality, memory, mortality, forgiveness, love, innocence, fragility, violence and beauty” taking a prominent role, according to Pellington. Lone will be released on April 1st in a streaming format as well as on custom-designed USB drives, available for pre-order through her artist store.

Pre-Order ‘Lone’ Film, Directed by Mark Pellington

The concept behind Lone was birthed out of a mutual desire between Wolfe and Pellington to expand upon the concept of a classic music video. What began as an idea for a nine minute short film extended into what is now just under an hour-long piece, with Pellington fleshing out the concept surrounding Chelsea’s lyrics and music. A nonlinear film, Lone takes its dialogue solely from lyrics off Pain is Beauty and explores some of the themes and ideas behind the record.

Lone serves as another major benchmark in Pellington’s remarkable career, taking its place alongside Pearl Jam’s era-defining, award-winning video for “Jeremy,” as well as his canon of videos for U2, INXS, Nine Inch Nails, Foo Fighters, Moby, Michael Jackson, and feature films I Melt With You, The Mothman Prophecies, Arlington Road and Henry Poole Is Here, among others.

Chelsea Wolfe Take Away Show for La Blogothèque

“Her best and most emotionally direct work yet . . . she seems to exist alone in her own world on Pain is Beauty, crystallizing and strengthening her musical language without compromising her original, principled vision.” Pitchfork

“Chelsea Wolfe has a surreal voice that cuts through her foggy, soulful, often haunting rock and folk music. There’s a thorny vision of yearning, heartbreak and death in Wolfe’s songs that’s striking, yet always brings us back to what makes these bleak themes so appealing, even beautiful.” NPR

“A shudder of emotional torment, poised between a swoon and a sob, resides in the voice of Chelsea Wolfe, and the ambiguity feels custom fitted to the music. Pain Is Beauty, her fourth album in three years, confirms her steadiness as a singer-songwriter of gothic intention, drawn to romantic fatalism and beautiful ruin.” New York Times

Tegan and Sara Announce Let's Make Things Physical Tour

Tegan and Sara are still on fire. This past year was a huge one for Canadian born twin sisters, with the release of the girls’ seventh studio album, Heartthrob – which marked their highest first week charting position of all time. The band scored their first mainstream hit with “Closer” and circled the globe in support of Heartthrob. Next up the girls are taking off to sea with Paramore as part of the Parahoy! cruise concert, then accompanying Katy Perry on the last leg of her international tour. In the meantime they’ve got a run of 19 headlining dates including a stop at NYC’s Hammerstein Ballroom, and back-to-back nights in DC and Chicago in addition to some massive performances at slew of summer festivals.

Matthew Ryan Issues "Anthem For The Broken"

Acclaimed songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Matthew Ryan has released “Anthem For The Broken” from his upcoming album Boxers for the sole purpose of raising awareness, and funds to benefit friends John and Amanda Anderson.

soundcloud.com/matthewryan101/an-anthem-for-the-broken

In 2013, Ryan traveled to Applehead Studios Woodstock, NY where he collaborated with Kevin Salem, who produced and mixed the album that has become Boxers.  Prior to executing an agreement to release the recordings, the artist has made this altruistic move to do his part in assisting friends in need.  He has posted a public statement requesting those moved by this story re-post his initiative which can be found here: johnandersonbenefit.bandcamp.com/album/an-anthem-for-the-broken-a-single-to-benefit-john-anderson.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8x5SoEB-SI

It reads: “How can it be that you can do everything right and still end up emotionally devastated and financially destroyed? My friend John Anderson and his wife Amanda are monuments to this truth. The story is beautiful, heartbreaking and angering. As a friend watching this story unfold it has been almost helplessly infuriating, but it’s also been staggering in the glowing grace and perseverance John, Amanda and their friends and family have displayed. What’s happening to John and Amanda could happen to anyone of us. John has been a healthy, committed, successful and communal human all his life. He took no known risks to earn the health sentence he now faces. And let me be clear, he faces it with strength and a certain graceful but slightly pained grin that is inspiring. A few years ago he was diagnosed with ALS. Initially he fought it, researched and hoped he could beat it. Late one night not long ago John and I sat out on the patio next to his pool talking about the will to fight what seemed fated until early in the morning. I remember waving goodbye the next day to a very healthy but worried looking John. I drove away naively hopeful. But ALS is a ruthless disease. It essentially breaks the brains ability to control and communicate with muscles. Muscles atrophy and eventually the body stops working. Cruelly one who suffers this disease is generally very aware inside their hearts and minds of what’s happening, even when the rest of their body begins shutting down. You can read more about it here: www.alsa.org/about-als/what-is-als.html.

My friend John is going through this. He’s nearing the last stages. John and his wife represent a lot of us to me. They’ve worked hard, they’ve been successful, they’ve been responsible, they’ve been loving friends and sturdy family members. In our circle they have been a center. Now not only are they emotionally distressed by the changes in what the future and the present would be, they are also under gigantic and daunting financial pressure. As a friend what else can I do? I have to do something. If I had the personal resources I would make it so that John and Amanda would not have to deal with a single financial concern going forward. John is smart both intellectually and emotionally. I can feel that he doesn’t want part of his legacy to be the financial hangover of a disease for Amanda and his family. So again, as a friend, what can I do? I can try and raise awareness, I can try to rally generosity and community to help these people that represent so many of us. Quietly this happens thousands of times a year in our country. I have my feelings on that, but that’s not the point here. The point is I’m offering a song, it’s not a lament. It’s all I can offer, that’s my talent or gift. It’s a song for fighters and for rallying the good in the human spirit. The song is called ‘An Anthem for The Broken.’ I want you to buy it, but frankly I don’t care if you listen to a note of it. The purchase of the song is set up for you to PAY WHAT YOU WANT. But I’m hoping you’ll PAY WHAT YOU CAN. All of the money that comes in from this single will go directly to John and Amanda with the exception of the fee Bandcamp charges to distribute music. With your help we can do more for them then I could ever do alone. I hope you’ll participate and I hope you’ll help to get others to participate. This really isn’t charity, this is love. The link to purchase is right below. Please do so and share this post.”

In regards to the recordings from November, 2013 that became Boxers, Ryan offers, “This is the record I’ve been moving towards since the beginning. It’s a collection of songs and melodies and music fueled by concise stories, metaphor and allegory where all the characters are fighting for something. Some are fighting for their lives, some for dignity, and others for love, security and/or fire. It’s a record informed and inspired by the times we’re all navigating via a love of the ever redemptive possibility in a pure and unadorned Rock N Roll. I grew up loving The Replacements, The Clash, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen. In fact all involved in the making of this music share a similar Rock N Roll DNA and historic ethos. I find myself so proud of the cohesive recklessness and cinema we were lucky to capture here.”

Boxers was produced and mixed by Kevin Salem. The band is Salem on Electric Guitar and various instruments, Brian Bequette on Bass, Brian Fallon (of Gaslight Anthem) on Electric Guitar, Joe Magistro on Drums, and Matthew Ryan on guitar, vocals and various instruments.

Basto release debut with Keep on Rocking

Belgian artist and producer BASTO makes his Ultra Music single release debut with “Keep On Rocking,” a jamming festival track-turned-airwave burner out today, Friday, February 21 via Beatport, followed by all other digital retailers on March 11. The song merges frenetic dance floor energy perfect for an all-nighter at your favorite hotspot with a seductively melodic sensibility.

“It was initially conceived as a festival DJ tune,” explains BASTO of the track he created to play at the Inox Festival, the largest electronic music festival in France. “There’s still this melody to it though. That’s important to me. You’ve got to find yourself humming it in the shower or the car. It’s my philosophy.”

Sharing his stage moniker “Basto” with a cat he adopted, Jef Martens dropped his first smash in 2005. “Rock With You” topped the dance charts in Belgium and Holland, and it took off at radio. As he continued to release singles, he eventually embraced his more classical inclinations with “Gregory’s Theme” in 2010. Originally written as a tribute to Hugh Laurie’s titular character on “House,” the song exploded as a worldwide club phenomenon. Soon, the likes of Kylie Minogue, The Wanted, Keane and Flo Rida sought BASTO out for high-profile remixes, while he eventually dropped his European mega-hit “Again and Again,” which currently exceeds 20 million views on YouTube and occupied Beatport’s Top 10 for a month upon release.

2012 saw him churn out two landmark songs under the production name of Lazy Jay he shares with his brother Toon Martens. He produced the triple-platinum smash “Scream & Shout” for Britney Spears and will.i.am and Azealia Banks’s breakthrough “212.” Unforgettable performances at the likes of Tomorrowland followed and he garnered the NRJ DJ Award for “Biggest Revelation” in France as well as being named #37 on the “Most Successful Songwriters of 2012″ list by leading industry publication MusicWeek.

Now, BASTO is setting his creative sights upon the U.S. with “Keep On Rocking.” Look for a brand new video for the track to be revealed soon.

Nick Waterhouse Releases Ty Segall Cover from Holly (Out 2/4)

“It No. 3,” the latest track off Nick Waterhouse’s forthcoming album Holly (due March 4 on Innovative Leisure) and Ty Segall cover, is available below.

soundcloud.com/innovativeleisure/nick-waterhouse-it-3-1#t=0:00

“It No. 3,” the latest track off Nick Waterhouse’s forthcoming album Holly (due March 4 on Innovative Leisure) and Ty Segall cover, is now streaming at Vogue bit.ly/1h6DNZj. The new record, which follows Waterhouse’s 2012 debut Time’s All Gone, has received early critical acclaim—Rolling Stone explains “Nick Waterhouse is a soul man, through and through,” while Paste Magazine praises the music as a “…cohesive selection of work that, presented together, tells a story.”

Furthermore, the video for “This is a Game” is premiering at Esquire: youtu.be/5THw4SZCXEE, and Waterhouse is featured in a Lexus ad, which debuted during the GRAMMYs telecast: youtu.be/9lbq-4gPtFc. To celebrate the release, Waterhouse is on a nationwide tour. See below for details.

Holly was produced by Waterhouse and Kevin Augunas (Cold War Kids, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros) and includes various song writing collaborations as well as covers of tracks by Young Holt Trio and Mose Allison among others. Of the new music, Waterhouse notes, “Thematically this record feels more like a novella, or poem with sections, or even a film, than a collection of songs. It is a work of fiction, with a protagonist, but also a floating omniscient narrator, and fragments of conversation from other characters. I was heavily influenced by my surroundings in young Los Angeles, as well as the concept of fate.” See reverse for full track listing.

Waterhouse grew up in Huntington Beach, CA. He established his musical sensibilities in the middle of the burgeoning Southern California psych-garage scene while retaining his unique perspective on the spirit of American rhythm & blues and rock & roll. Waterhouse started performing as a teenager noting, “I found it had the same feeling I got racing motorcycles as a kid, which is a fight-or-flight feeling of things happening in ‘real time’…I felt like that was the most focusing thing about playing music versus other forms of art. You have to live with what you do in an immediate moment.”

Ski Lodge Premiere "Our Love is Over Now"

Twenty-plus years of stories, twenty-plus years of perfecting music’s craft, Ski Lodge’s Big Heart is exactly what a debut record should be: the culmination of a creative force’s life on this planet. Andrew Marr, the multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter behind Ski Lodge, has created a deeply personal record that overflows with lush melodies and insatiably catchy choruses. His songs occasionally deal with dark matters—infidelity, painful break-ups, loneliness, disjointed father-son dynamics—but Marr bathes them in a blissful light ripe for sing-alongs.

“I try to write songs honestly, and a lot of the things going on in my head that I struggle with might be deemed ‘dark,’ but I don’t think that means I can’t sing about them in a way that is musically upbeat or poppy,” Marr says, from his home in New York City. It’s a dichotomy that also translates to Marr’s choice for musical moniker. He explains the name Ski Lodge “evoked an image of being warm by a fire, alone or with friends, while outside exists the cold and cruel winter.”

Big Heart, Ski Lodge’s debut full-length, out this summer on Dovecote Records, is Marr’s fullest realization of this hot and cold split. Marr wrote all of the lyrics and music, and played nearly every sound that ended up on the record. However, this was the first time the 26-year-old worked in a professional studio with a producer, the indelible Lewis Pesacov (Best Coast, Fool’s Gold), over several weeks in Los Angeles. The combination of Marr’s intrinsic songwriting and Pesacov’s LA-defining production skills resulted in music with fuller breadth and scope than Ski Lodge’s previous release without losing any of the wry innocence that made 2011′s self-titled debut EP so much fun.

soundcloud.com/skilodge/our-love-is-over-now-1/s-3JZ5X

The one exception is the lead single “Just To Be Like You,” which was recorded with the full band in Upstate New York using producer Kevin McMahon (Walkmen, Real Estate). Prefix Mag called the track “sugary sweet pop,” while Pitchfork warned its readers not to “be deceived by the energetic, hopscotching riff” before lauding the single’s dark depths. The song and its accompanying video of cult imagery are an exploration of contrast that fits in perfectly with both the album and Ski Lodge as a whole: deeply affecting and unmistakably danceable.
