Empire! Empire! (I Was a Lonely Estate) - What It Takes to Move Forward Reissue

Count Your Lucky Stars is repressing the debut full-length from Empire! Empire! (I Was a Lonely Estate). The What It Takes to Move Forward LP repress and CD reissue are now available for Pre-Order.


The band decided to dust off the old album and give it a proper release tour, playing it from front to back for a special 10-day run. All dates with Warren Franklin & the Founding Fathers. Special edition limited-edition covers available on the tour.


In 2009, Empire! Empire! (I Was a Lonely Estate) released their debut LP, What It Takes to Move Forward, which, alongside fellow acts like Algernon Cadwallader, Snowing, and Into It. Over It., helped give rise to the now burgeoning “Emo Reivial” scene. After it went out of print, the demand for a repress began growing and growing, until at last, Count Your Lucky Stars tracked down the missing pieces to make it a reality. The reissue features reworked album art and two additional bonus tracks, along with the updated and correct sequential order.

POP ETC Releases “Running In Circles”

“Pop is music that gives you something to hold on to,” says Chris Chu of POP ETC. It can be a melody, a lyric, a rhythm, or all of the above but pop music always elevates and celebrates the hook – the catchy bit that sticks in your head, or sends you reaching to turn up the volume. At its best, pop also mixes familiar elements with the fresh and unexpected. POP ETC has evolved by combining its roots in rock with a diverse variety of popular recordings.


After spending time in Japan, 2014 was committed to POP ETC (Chris Chu, his brother Jon Chu, and Julian Harmon) being holed up in Brooklyn, NY writing and recording material that continuously reflects the band’s fresh approach to music. “Running In Circles” is one of the first songs that came out of these sessions. The song embodies the crisp yet rugged aesthetic POP ETC has cultivated over the years. Chris Chu explains that the song is essentially about “losing track of where you are and where your life is taking you. It’s about losing someone or something close to you and the disorientation that follows.” POP ETC worked with Yale Yng-Wong (Bear Hands, Chairlift) and Vlado Meller (Kanye West, Metallica) to mix and master “Running In Circles”.

Vinyl Floor Vaudeville CD Review

Change the Song is a track that links together The Killers and Franz Ferdinand with a rich eighties style that is reminiscent of The Psychedelic Furs or Talking Heads. The rich production of this introductory track will immediately draw listeners in to the second cut, Shift. Shift is a track that has Vinyl Floor strip down their style to adopt a much more front-forward and Detroit rock-esque sound. The quicker tempo of Shift provides ample momentum for listeners to stick around until the band closes up shop with Angel (Reprise).

Angel of Crime is a richly ornamented track that tells just as much of a story with the track’s instrumentation as the vocals contribute. This tendency is continued through our favorite track on Vaudeville, Sensational Freedom Country Estate. Sensational Freedom Country Estate pushes things to a bold new frontier with smart instrumentation and vocals; the drums are really able to shine with this cut in a fashion unparalleled on Vaudeville. Castles is a more introspective track that utilizes a very traditional singer-songwriter style, firmly placing Vinyl Floor into a mid-seventies style. The act is talented enough to make the effort work in the ears and hearts of current music fans through an emotive and intricate guitar line that is weaved through the track.


The great thing about Vaudeville is the fact that individuals that wish to hear the title can pay a fair price (the band suggests a level of donation) to see precisely what is going on. The band has clarified and evolved their sound to make for one of the catchiest and most fulfilling albums that we have reviewed in the last year.

French Toast Crunch

French Toast Crunch is a cereal that first debuted in 1995 but the cereal was taken off of shelves in 2005. Fast-forward about 10 years and General Mills has heard enough public outcry to release the cereal yet again. The cereal is going to be rolled out at the national level first starting in January 2015 and will run around $3.50-5.00 for a box. The cereal is precisely like I remember with the perfect amounts of hearty and sweet.

This is precisely the sort of cereal that one would eat if they feel that some of General Mills other efforts such as the classic Cinnamon Toast Crunch as a little on the sugary side. The cereal itself holds up perfectly in milk providing a much more nuanced and deep set of flavors. However there is a sense that one can eat the cereal dry for a perfect mid afternoon or late-night snack. The successful letter-writing campaign that ultimately guided French Toast Crunch back on the shelves should be seen as the fashion in which individuals that like products that are sadly defunct should attempt to have their voices heard.


 


With the rerelease of French Toast Crunch up amongst other 90s icons it seems clear to me that more products will be given a new lease on life when it comes to 2015. I would heartily recommend purchasing a box of French Toast Crunch as it is the perfect blend of new – it is back on the shelves, and old – it has a very lengthy pedigree when one compares it to other cereals that are currently on the market. If you are a fan of French Toast Crunch when you were younger make it a point to pick up a box. If you like tasting the wide variety of cereals that are on the market buy a box.

There is a sense that tortilla chips are not the healthiest thing to snack upon and that one should have smaller portions when it comes to eating these chips. The bean side of the chips makes for a much more substantial hearty mouth feel than tortilla chips meaning that individuals will meet the needs less in the way to feel full. Each of the varietals of Beanfield’s being and rice chips are corn free, do not possess any genetically modified organisms, and are gluten free on top of that – the product is fine to eat if one is vegan or has a wide variety of dietary restrictions. Another important thing about these chips are the protein contents of the same 1 ounce serving. This ounce contains 4 g of protein, substantially greater than similar products in the snack food aisle. Get On Up Blu-Ray Set Review

The story of James Brown is tremendously interesting if one would choose to read a biography. However get on up is a compelling and always interesting film replete with talented actors no matter whether they are large forces in the Hollywood such as Dan Aykroyd or up and coming stars like Chadwick Boseman (42, Captain America: Civil War). Boseman’s role as Brown showcases all the glitz and glamour and the tumultuous times that Brown experienced in his Hall of Fame life.91KEh1ovLJL._SL1500_


This biopic is similar to a the portrayal of Johnny Cash or Ray Charles presented in Walk the Line or Ray. There is a stellar cinematography that is present through the entirety of Get On Up, something that is bolstered through brilliant set design and costuming, hairstyles and parlance, and the like. Beyond the feature film there are a number of Blu-Ray exclusive featurettes.


The additional scenes that are restored to the film provide considerable context for the actions taken by the cast while the snippets that are in Get On Up are restored to full performances of the tracks. The documentary that links together Brown with Hollywood royalty is perhaps the most compelling while additional features that are present on the DVD release as well including the commentary that is laid down with the director, Tate Taylor, make this a must purchase. The Blu-ray set that we reviewed contains the main presentation along with DVD and digital component – no matter what set up one has, there is a version presented here. There is also a standard DVD edition that is available. Both versions of Get On Up are available from a wide variety of brick and mortar and online locations. This is a must purchase for anyone that is a fan of musician biopic and of period pieces.

Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever DVD Set

There was a special concert that catapulted a great many R&B and pop singers into the mainstream; that show was blah. However much the show was vital to the creation of some of the most well beloved musical stars of the last 50 years the sheer fact is that it is difficult if not virtually impossible to find copies of the performances that are presented on the show, a feat made all the more difficult since this release contains 20 minutes of air time that were not present in its original airing. To plug this hole that currently exists in television history Time Life Entertainment has cleaned up a great amount of the footage that is still available for the show.

This means that there are a number of performances by a young Michael Jackson and further presentations by the Miracles, Supremes, and Richard Pryor. The vocal quality is pretty stellar given the age of the tapes while the fashions and overall feel of the show are drastically different than our current sensibilities are. This DVD set would be perfect for those people that are fans of the Motown sound or of music from previous generations. The site has been priced at a level that would make it an easy inclusion as a stocking stuffer or for a perfect last minute birthday gift. The set runs about 80 dollars from the Time Life website and is available at a wide array of brick and mortar and online video retailers.


 


Strong sales of this DVD set should be indication enough for Time Life to continue to delve into the archives that exist for Motown. Check this out today, watch the performances, and be taken back to an earlier period in popular music.

We had first heard about monthly subscription boxes that provide the required ingredients for a meal a few months ago but it was not until a few days ago when we received our first box from Blue Apron. This is a large box – one could easily use it to pack away stuff for a garage, and it is chock full with the different ingredients that two people will need to create three meals. The important part of the box has to be the sheer amount of ingredients that are included for the three meals that the box provides. This means that an individual or family does not need to have the sort of pantry that a 5 star Michelin chef would have. Rather all one needs to do is use the Blue Apron inclusions to make an absolutely stellar meal.


All of the fixins are present no matter how small of a difference that they add – garlic, beets, shallots, galangal are all included. The meat servings are substantive enough that one will feel full when paired with the side dishes. A chicken schnitzel dish is able to jazz up dull chicken. Our

The great thing about Blue Apron is that for those items that are hard or downright impossible to separate into a perfect proportion for a recipe like the lemons, onions, and garlic that were all included in our box, Blue Apron actually provides some extra to ensure that buyers have enough for their dish. This means that we were given a whole bunch of garlic as opposed to the three pieces that were required for the plate. The instructions are provided with the box are very easy to follow and would be able to be conducted successfully by anyone that has had any sort of time in the kitchen. Blue Apron would be a perfect purchase for those individuals that might not have the sort of culinary creativity to keep things popping; expect to spend about $60 per each 3 meal box.

The Journey Charts The Remarkable Musical Voyage Of Saxophone Legend Charles McPherson

One of the last authentic practitioners of bebop saxophone, Charles McPherson remains at the top of his game. On his new album The Journey, McPherson demonstrates all the vigor, inventiveness, technical dexterity and expressive warmth that drew attention to this brilliant alto stylist during his formative associations with Charles Mingus, Barry Harris, Pat Martino and Art Farmer. The vitality, wit and sheer power of his playing on The Journey belie the fact that McPherson has been in the public eye since the early 1960s. His lyrical and virile improvising throughout the recording asserts that the career upswing that began for McPherson when he added passionate alto statements to the soundtrack of Clint Eastwood’s 1998 Charlie Parker bio-pic, Bird, followed by the excellent all-star albums that came in the film’s wake, remains in motion. Working with a Denver-based contingent of estimable musicians including saxophonist Keith Oxman, pianist Chip Stephens, bassist Ken Walker and drummer Todd Reid, McPherson demonstrates his laudable command of the bebop idiom, transforming original tunes, songbook standards and bop classics into fresh, invigorating fare.




The origins of The Journey can be traced to a fortuitous meeting that occurred at a musical clinic, featuring McPherson among others, at the Denver, Colorado jazz club Dazzle. There he met the saxophonist and high school instructor, Keith Oxman. Musical encounters with Oxman and local musicians Stephens, Walker and Reid, were so successful that the veteran saxophonist encouraged a recording to document the obvious connection that the five musicians had so quickly established. The April and May 2014 sessions produced a strikingly comfortable blend of standards (“Spring Is Here,” “I Should Care”), McPherson originals (“Manhattan Nocturne,” “The Journey,” “Bud Like”), work from both Oxman and Stephens, and a shout out to McPherson’s deepest influence, Charlie Parker (“Au Privave”).



Thoroughly comfortable with the intricacies of bebop, Oxman and each of the rhythm team display élan as confident soloists, as an indivisible unit, and as a rock-solid foundation for McPherson.  The star altoist – as fluent as ever on brisk bop performances and lyrically pointed on ballads (hear his lovely duet with Stephens on “I Should Care,” a standard favored by Parker) – sounds as robust and bursting with ideas as his devotees, drawn to the authenticity and communicative power of McPherson’s characteristic playing, have come to expect.

The presence of another saxophonist adds harmonic and tonal color to the ensemble and further stimulates McPherson’s creative juices. Oxman’s own “Tami’s Tune” is a feature for the tenor saxophonist on which McPherson graciously absents himself, better to train the spotlight on this fine improviser. As McPherson states, “Keith is extremely creative and in possession of a really good technique. But most importantly he has spirituality in his playing, and a depth of feeling that is rare. He should definitely be heard more!” As should McPherson, who, as The Journey clearly exhibits, remains in peak form as he continues his lifelong musical voyage.

Nevada Rose Announce Tour with The Paramedic







The electronicore band Nevada Rose has announced a new tour with the metalcore group The Paramedic. The ten day run starts on 1/16 in Kent, OH and concludes on 1/25 in Halethorpe, MD. 


Nevada Rose’s debut album Paint Me In Light was produced by Andrew Wade (A Day To Remember, Motionless in White) and released via Tragic Hero Records last summer and is available on iTunes.


The album is “a fire comprised of hot and cold vocals toeing the line between shattering screams, gruff bellows and clean-as-a-whistle melodies, churning guitars, persistent drumming, 808’s and show-stopping bass drops riding atop an unstoppable electronic tidal wave.” says Brian Campbell of the Buffalo Examiner.

When you blend pulsating electronic dance hooks seamlessly with elements of hardcore, metal, and pop you’ll have yourself the album Paint Me In Light from the New Jersey band Nevada Rose. The record merges their influences of acts like Skrillex and Zomboy with hardcore bands such as The Devil Wears Prada and A Day To Remember, while allowing their pop sensibility to shine through using three part harmonies and radio worthy melodies. Capitalizing on these elements, the group, which is comprised of Nicki Imperato (vocals), Justin DiMarco (vocals, guitar), Adam Ellenberger (guitar, programming), Kyle Cleffi (drums, programming), and Mike Batchelder (bass), are able to shorten the gap between EDM, pop, and hardcore music. This is never more apparent than on their first single Anchors For Sunsets, a song that boasts lines like “If only we were waves, forget the ocean, pushing forward onto better days.”



Paint Me In Light was produced by Andrew Wade (A Day To Remember, The Word Alive, Motionless in White) and during the process they knew that they had something special with this album “We wrote this record with the intention of giving each track its own individual feel,” says DiMarco. “No two songs came together the same way. The band will bring an idea to the table and songs would complete themselves by experimenting with electronics, guitar layers, and vocal patterns.” As far as the lyrical aspect of the album, most of the foundation was laid by Imperato and then each band member contributed from their life experiences, personal struggles, relationships and the pursuit of personal goals and dreams


Nevada Rose has quickly gained a following after debuting at the 2013 CMJ Music Festival with He Is Legend. After being a band for less than a year they signed a deal with Tragic Hero Records (A Skylit Drive, ERRA) who released the full-length Paint Me In Light in 2014. “We are very excited and proud to become part of the Tragic Hero family,” says DiMarco. “When we heard that Tragic Hero was interested in signing us, we were absolutely thrilled.” This was quite an achievement for such a young band and it shows that if you work hard and write really great songs, then the rest will follow.

Paul Maged Diamonds & Demons CD Review

Look At Me is the first track on Paul Maged’s latest album, Diamonds & Demons and will capture the attention of listeners through vocals that possess hints of Billy Bragg and Tim Armstrong. Maged’s main contribution to music is having a hard-nosed set of vocals that elicit comparisons to punk and the protest tradition while having absurdly catchy heavy rock arrangements. Taken together, these disparate units make for an album that is spontaneous, fun, and will always impress. Cause & Effect builds up the momentum with a rapid tempo and supersonic vocals laid down by Maged; a funky, jam band—esque style can be heard in the periphery of the track.

Love & Loss In The Western World begins with a guitar line that will immediately command attention, which is paired with a tempestuous and darkly emotive guitar/drum dynamic. This late-album effort gives Maged a canvas on which he can expand upon a hard rock meets progressive style. Each of the tracks on Diamonds & Demons could easily make it onto rotation on rock radio stations; Maged’s talent is such that there are enough twists and turns taken here that listeners will have to spin the disc multiple times to hear everything that was committed to recording. 64th & 1st needs little more than Maged’s vocals and a piano, but the narrative that is created here is considerably greater than its constituent elements. Teenage Time Killers To Release New LP in Early 2015 via Rise Records






Teenage Time Killers, a supergroup led by members of metal legends Corrosion of Conformity, have signed with Rise Records and will release their debut LP, ‘Teenage Time Killers – Greatest Hits Vol. 1′, in early 2015.



The brainchild of COC drummer Reed Mullin (COC), guitarist Mick Murphy (My Ruin/Chevy Metal/Birds of Satan) and producer John ‘Lou” Lousteau, Teenage Time Killers* also features a lineup comprised of alternative/metal/punk titans such as Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters/Nirvana), Corey Taylor (Slipknot/Stone Sour), Neil Fallon (Clutch), Jello Biafra (Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School of Medicine, Dead Kennedys), Matt Skiba (Alkaline Trio), Brian Baker (Minor Threat/Bad Religion), Randy Blythe (Lamb of God), Lee Ving (Fear), Pat Smear (Foo Fighters/Nirvana/Germs), Nick Oliveri (Kyuss/Queens of the Stone Age) and many others.

Frontier Ruckus' Christmastime Video Released Today

Frontier Ruckus shares the brand new music video for their new track “Bathroom Stall Hypnosis.” The disturbing Christmastime video features a young girl’s sugar-fueled, hallucinogenic, and trippy Christmas Eve, which ends in horror. The video was directed by Weston Getto Allen and Dorian Electra and recorded to VHS. “We gave them artistic carte blanche and were braced for something horrifying. We loved it. It kind of feels like a holiday mix of The Ring with The Santa Clause, minus Tim Allen,” said frontman Matthew Milia. The video premiered via Flavorwire, who said it’s “easily the weirdest Christmas-themed clip we’ve seen in a while, thanks to one candy obsessed little girl. Flavorwire is proud to premiere the home video sugar coma in all its glory.”




 


Earlier last month on November 11, Frontier Ruckus released their fourth full-length, Sitcom Afterlife, via Quite Scientific Records. Unlike the band’s previous trilogy of records, which served as a tribute of sorts to the nostalgia of a Midwestern suburbia, Sitcom Afterlife speaks with a more compact and frontal approach. There’s a structured forward motion to this collection, a sense of urgency toward the present, and brevity that speaks of immediate passion – not disregarding that lived-in past but also not forlornly dragging it behind.

“We had a blast filming this video, the guys are all old skateboarders but I can’t skate for shit so I jumped on one of my daughters bikes and did some tricks. I took on some legitimate scrapes and bruises but the good vibes were ever present!”


After forming in small town Paducah, KY in 1999, Teenage Rehab quickly garnered a reputation for  raw, in-your-face, abrasive punk rock.  Their mission simple;  to embrace high energy punk rock influences and put their own twist on it.
