Slinger Beat the Odds CD Review

Beat the Odds is a raw and intense collection of songs that capture Dave’s wide array of influences. This means that Take Me Away has a CSNY meets America type of groove, while Rock A Bye Baby has a late sixties / early seventies sound that is reminiscent of Alice Cooper or Brownsville Station.

On The Other Side is unique in the sense that Slinger comes up with a very timeless rock style while imbuing the track with hints of a progressive (Genesis, Yes) styling. The sizzling guitar work present on Always Ready for Love will immediately capture the minds and hearts of listeners, while the production ensures that the constituent elements of the act are able to stand on their own.

Stop Gunnin’ Me Down is another solid inclusion on Beat the Odds, as the additional elements (bongos, congas, and tambourine) are able to provide additional depth to an eighties rock composition. The track dovetails nicely with Letting Go, an earlier track that showcases the sheer breadth of Dave’s compositions. You’re in Danger is a track that will destroy listener’s assumptions about Slinger, as a saxophone line fights for dominance with the very blues-heavy guitar present. I feel that Beat the Odds does successfully foster a cohesive identity for Slinger; the changes in style and overall content showcase that the band evolved and never was content to rest on their laurels.

Chromeo White Women CD Review

White Women is an amazing retro-tinged album that is strong from beginning to end; Sexy Socialite is the perfect example of a track that will immediately fill dance floors, while Over Your Shoulder keeps things hopping despite having a much more contemplative arrangement. While listeners may be familiar with the tracks that have be released to this point (Sexy Socialite, Lost On The Way Home), the album’s remaining efforts are absolutely stellar and merit repeat listens.

The features that are present on White Women are some of the best-fitting and most well thought-out; Toro Y Moi spins things into an entirely new realm with his contributions to Come Alive, while Solange’s vocals firmly plant this track in a late eighties / early nineties groove. Play The Fool takes hints of Madonna’s Dress You Up and links in a solid narrative; this tale of love and lost showcases all the beauty of the mid-eighties and re-contextualizes it for the contemporary period. Fall Back 2U, White Women’s final track, showcases the fact that Chromeo will not let their listeners take a breath.

Chromeo has been one of the most consistent bands over their career, but I feel as if White Women will be the album that gets the average music fan to pay attention. For those that have been listening to Chromeo since Needy Girl, White Women is a further evolution, an album that showcases two individuals that have fully realized their vision. Make sure to see Chromeo on their latest tour dates; the frenetic energy that is present on this title is only likely to be increased in a live setting.

Nooch - "Just Do It" feat. Wale

“I’m all about a check, Nike-Just Do It,” proclaims Nooch, the 18-year old rising rap talent from D.C., on the chorus of his new single. Premiered by NahRight, the song, “Just Do It,” features local legend and Maybach Music Group rapper Wale. Acknowledging that Nooch is the son of prominent D.C. street rapper Boobe, Wale raps “me and Boobe in a Ghost,” before also shouting out Nooch, saying “tell Nooch come, bring the whole streets out.”

“Just Do It” is the second single from Nooch’s forthcoming mixtape, Sophomore Slump, which releases in May and is a follow-up to last year’s Rookie Season. The first single, “Too Many” featuring Fat Trel, debuted on The Source. From Rookie Season, Nooch’s “Feel This” video recently premiered on HotNewHipHop, while the video for “Suge Knight,” from his collaborative project with Cerda, first appeared on AllHipHop.

MINERAL ANNOUNCE REUNION TOUR

Mineral have announced a reunion tour for this fall that will mark their 20^th anniversary. The shows will be the band’s first since disbanding in 1998 and begin with a two-night stand at New York’s Bowery Ballroom on September 5^th and 6^th. The first leg of dates run through September 12^th and will take Mineral westward to The Grog Shop in Cleveland, OH, and the band are also confirmed to perform at the Fest 13 in Gainesville, FL on November 2^nd. A current itinerary is below and tickets go on sale tomorrow at 10am CT.

“Reconnecting with each other and this material for the first time in 17 years has been a real joy and pleasure. The shows will be the icing on the cake,” said Chris Simpson (vocals, guitar). “We are grateful for the opportunity and looking forward to getting to play for all the people who have loved us all along, as well as the many who have discovered us posthumously along the way.”

Formed in Houston, TX in 1994 by friends Simpson, Jeremy Gomez (bass), Scott McCarver (guitar), and Gabriel Wiley (drums), Mineral proved to be a powerful and lasting influence across a then-burgeoning indie and emo music scene in spite of their short career. The band cut their teeth on the road before recording a single note, touring alongside bands including Jimmy Eat World, The Promise Ring, Texas is the Reason, Knapsack, Braid, and The Get Up Kids. Mineral relocated to Austin and released debut single “Gloria b/w Parking Lot” via Caulfield Records before signing to crank!, which would release their debut LP The Power Of Failing in 1996.

Following that album – which the LA Weekly’s West Coast Sound would eventually claim as one of the ‘Top 20 Emo Albums in History,’ writing: “The empyreal finger-picking crescendos, the punch-to-the-gut octave note explosions, the not-quite-in-key vocals issuing soft-then-screamed confessions about the shortcomings of self — it’s all gorgeously imperfect, from opening notes of ’5, 8, and 10′ to the harrowing chorus of ‘Parking Lot’” – the band signed to Interscope Records and recorded their final album for crank!, EndSerenading, with producer Mark Trombino (Blink-182, Jimmy Eat World). Despite the album’s gorgeous and impassioned songs, the writing and recording process proved too difficult and Mineral disbanded before its 1998 release, citing creative differences. Simpson and Gomez went on to form The Gloria Record and Wiley founded Pop Unknown. Simpson also occasionally performs under the moniker Zookeeper.

Slinger Feature

The story behind Slinger could easily be transformed into a television show or movie. The band has been around for a number of years, far enough back in history that they committed their first recordings to a reel-to-reel. The act poured their hearts and souls into their work, and were able to garner considerable support in and around the Orange County (California) area.

Donnie Reed – a font of inspiration for the band – perishes in a motorcycle accident, forcing Slinger to hang up instruments and move away from music. A considerable amount of time – twenty years – passes while Slinger is able to make a name for himself outside of music. A number of interesting coincidences occur in a short period of time, re-igniting the spark. After a set of calls, Slinger is able to find the missing puzzle pieces. Jeff Dostis, a member of the band from years back, is located through a song hosted online. The two musicians are able to lay down an intimate and down to earth track in She Sets Me Free.

What would have normally been a one and done with two musicians going their separate ways becomes something much more intense when both Slinger and Jeff are able to continue working together. The songs are coming forth like they did when the band was still are their peak. Older and wiser, Slinger are creating music that will impress fans of any rock genre. Full Sail ESB
