Today Making Movies’ track “Cuna de Vida” – from the band’s brand new album A La Deriva (released March 5 and produced by Steve Berlin) – is featured on AOL Spinner’s “Song of the Day.” Download the song here. The young Kansas City- based band hits the road next week for a Spring Tour that winds through parts of the Midwest, south, and west. Making Movies’ complete list of currently confirmed tour dates is included below.
Making Movies makes music that matters now: rhythmically adventurous, lyrically substantive, and melodically sensuous—the progressive Latino sound. Here’s what critics are saying about Making Movies:
“There’s no mistaking that A La Deriva is rooted in Latin music —
but there are plenty of moments when you wouldn’t think to file Making Movies under any genre except plain old rock. Or, yes, punk.” – Pitch
“Making Movies shows us how deeply thought-out lyrics sound
next to a rhythm track that somehow both propels and floats
without violating the laws of physics.” – NPR
“…there’s a lot that’s quite unexpected about Making Movies,
let alone where they call home.” – Pop Matters
Led by Panamanian brothers Enrique and Diego Chi (singer/songwriter/guitarist and bassist respectively) – and made complete by percussionist Juan Carlos Chaurand and drummer Brendan Culp – Making Movies has been hailed as “a rare crossover band…that embraces its heritage without being wholly defined by it” (The Pitch). Early reviews of A La Deriva give praise that “influences on the album go far beyond traditional Latin forms” – where “attitudes from early New Wave and classic alternative rock often assert themselves dominantly” and where “plenty of beautiful ugliness in the guitar work [is] also offset by…pretty moments.” (Ink)
The strong rapport between Berlin (whose studio credits include Los Lobos first 2 records, Ozomatli’s Embrace The Chaos, Los Super Seven’s Canto) and the members of Making Movies is palpable, and for A La Deriva the collaboration created a sound that is “bigger, roomier and even more raucously joyous” (Ink Magazine) than the band’s first recording. Berlin was first turned on to Making Movies when the guys opened up for Los Lobos at their Kansas City show. “I was struck by the effortless way they moved between musical styles, all the while managing to make each one completely their own,” Berlin explains. “It was fairly instantaneous that I decided I wanted to work with them.”
“We went into the studio thinking Steve would trim down our sound, make us sound more concise,” Enrique recently told the Kansas City Star. “But he did the opposite. He’d have us drag things out, follow our instincts and get weirder and more complex.” As to Berlin’s thoughts on the final result, he says “…it’s rare that [when producing an album] I anticipate a result and it’s a million times better than what I anticipated. This is one of those records.”
Now, Making Movies gears up to bring their music nationwide.
