CoCoNut Porter (Maui Brewing)

Maui Brewing Company’s CoCoNut Porter pours with a dark-brown, almost black coloration and a thick, light-brown / tannish head. Lacing is substantial with the CoCoNut Porter and will work its way down a glass with few breaks in the foam from beginning to end. There is a toasted malt nose that does not provide imbibers with too many of the tricks that the beer has up its sleeve; an initial sip showcases a wide amount of flavors from the aforementioned malt-heaviness to the eponymous coconut presence. There is just enough in the way of hops here to flesh out the effort, making for something that is smooth, intricate, and eminently drinkable.

Maui’s CoCoNut Porter is able to have a fuller body than other porters on the market, and I feel it is precisely what is needed to refresh a style that has tended to lag behind the times. The inclusion of CoCoNut is matched perfectly with a small amount of alcohol burn, ensuring that each sip of the beer is well-balanced. As the CoCoNut Porter continues to warm, the sweeter elements of the brew fade slightly into the periphery. The toastiness of the coconut at this point comes into focus and works in harmony with the malt side of things; it is this ability to shift and change through flavors and tastes that makes this into something that would work well in multiples over the course of a night.
