The Circus In Your Town Interview

Who are you and how long have you been active?

(Tracy) Tracy Dyson Guitarist/vocals, Josh Morgan drums. The Circus In Your Town, has been making music as a band since 2002, and this July will be 11 years.

Who are you listening to right now?

(Josh) Blink 182, Pantera, and The Black Crows (Tracy) Ubik a local Seattle WA. band, Mokshya a band from Flagstaff AZ, and The Color Morale

How does a track move from initial thought to finished effort?

(Josh) It starts as a jam and we molded from there, we spend a lot of time tweaking things and experimenting with parts and sounds, when we feel we have something we record it and take notes as the music listener.

How has your style evolved and changed over the time since you first started? Where do you think that your overall sound will go to in the months and years in the future?

(Tracy) The style in the beginning was straight up rock, than it changed to more noise rock with a solid structure, we really experimented with all different kinds of sounds and styles in the beginning. It’s really hard to pin point on where the sound of the band goes within a time frame, we constantly jump around a lot in the way we write. It is a very in that time and moment style of song writing and right now we are trying the 2 piece band of just guitar and drums with a massive heavy low end sound. In the future maybe adding more members I think a 2nd drummer with a more electronic sound and kit would be cool, but who knows we just go where the music takes us.

What bands would you say are your greatest influences, and how do they factor into your sound?

(Josh) Nirvana, Guns And Roses, The Melvins, Soulfly, Alice In Chains, Tool, Pearl Jam. These bands factor into our sound by their power and emotion that each band put out in their own way, and what we take from those bands and put into our music is the individuality and original concept of being your own band and not the sound our influences.

On any Youtube video, there are countless genres thrown around for any song. How does that help or hurt music and musicians, and what genre(s) would your music fall into?

(Tracy) Youtube has hurt music and helped it mainly by laziness and convenience especially pointed toward the music industry in artist discovery and concerts attendance that I have seen in my opinion, but it also has done amazing things on those same exact notes. For indie artist it opens doors to reaching fans, concert attendance, and music industry discovery. Musicians can show their skills, gear, and put up their own lesson teaching videos. Bands can post music videos, interviews, and live performances in hope of getting some new fans and expand to a bigger audience. The Circus In Your Town genre, as we like to call ourselves experimental hard rock.

How do you feel things are different musically and culturally between Italy and the rest of the world?

(Josh) We really don’t know on what’s going on in the rest of the world musically unless it’s put right in our face by the main stream media. Culturally makes it even harder to compare for me when I’ve never gotten the chance to visit Italy, so I have nothing to compare on. We would love to come visit and play shows to the fans if given the chance in a heartbeat.

We’ve heard and seen some crazy things at performance; what incredible or crazy times have you had on the road?

(Tracy) A funny story we ended up breaking down when we were on tour in Oregon twice. We blew our thermostat going over Grants Pass in Oregon on our way to California. We made it off the freeway and into Heaven and Earth Café parking lot, dropped our trailer and got towed back to the nearest town to get parts for a simple fix. When to the auto parts store and the employee’s had no clue on what a thermostat was. We finely after seven trips in and out of the parts store got the right part and installed it, after install we notice the new replace thermostat gasket the store gave us was the wrong one after we had put it all back together.

They had no more and told us to go to a repair shop up the road that they would have parts, so we when to the shop asked for a new gasket they told us we had blown head gasket, tore out our brand new thermostat destroyed it to remain open in hopes to cool the engine from overheating, so the shop claimed it was not a thermostat issue that we needed to leave the car for a week and them pay $1500.00 to fix a blown head gasket. We said no and left hoping the fix would hold and ended breaking down again down the road from the repair shop so call fix. We ended up cancelling the shows and getting home we found out later it was the thermostat and all we needed was the right thermostat gasket a $3.00 part and we would have been fine, and the shop had slashed our radiator hose the whole trip set us back $2400.00 but it was still fun.

What does the rest of 2013 hold for you, and how can readers connect with you and your music?

(Josh) We are always writing new music, shows and some touring, all in support of our new album Full Spectrum for the rest of 2013, and hopefully at the end of 2014 record and put out another album.
