Long-time readers of NeuFutur will notice that our coverage has changed over the years. We initially began as a music magazine, expanded into movies, and gradually added health and fitness and travel sections in the last few years. The wife and I had our first child, and as a result, the type of material that we covered has changed again. We were invited to a Cleveland institution, the Glidden House, and were impressed at how good service made for any hiccups regarding our children disappear. The staff at the Glidden House were ready and willing to help out with any concerns. Whether it was finding local restaurants that served late, attractions for the day of our visit, or even a late-night silverware request that we had, the employees went above and beyond. We were particularly impressed with a senior member of staff that informed us about the history of the Glidden House, an AAA-rated Three Diamond boutique hotel during our latter request.
The hotel (1901 Ford Drive, Cleveland, Ohio) is centrally located in University Circle, meaning that there are a number of dining options and attractions to delve into during one’s stay. While the Glidden House is a slight jaunt from Cleveland’s downtown (8 miles, or about 15 minutes with normal area traffic), the ability to avoid much of the hectic driving conditions of the city make it a smart choice for those with business in the area.
The downstairs is ornately designed, with the dining room done in a fashion that is reminiscent of the era when it was still a possession of the Glidden family. The Glidden House has a number of amenities that make it extremely easy to stick around the area; the Trentina restaurant is on the hotel’s property, while guests are treated to a European-style breakfast. For those having business in Cleveland, the free parking, Wi-Fi and printing access will further decrease the stress that one may have.
When one enters their room, they will see the duality which the Glidden House offers; there is a scenic view from one’s window connecting a large (when compared to many hotels) room to the lush foliage surrounding the hotel. The 42” LCD TV has a bevy of stations to keep all members of the family occupied, while one can secret themselves away in the room’s inviting tubs. For those visitors that would like a historic Cleveland experience, the Glidden House offers the chance to stay in a number of suites that were part of the original 1910 housing plan. We were a big fan of the Palette Lounge that really captured the essence of the early 20th century; the bar can easily accommodate 15-20 people in close and cozy confines. The same wide-open feel is cultivated nicely here with large windows and tree cover. While the Glidden House is a perfect location for those on business as well as those looking to spend a night away from their domicile, the Glidden House can be reserved for events, parties, and wedding receptions. When one considers that they are cavorting and carousing in a 100-plus year old mansion, the $179 (newer room) to $239 (mansion suite, with a mini refrigerator, wet bar, and microwave) cost seems extremely low. The Glidden House offers a number of specials which bundle access to museums (Museum of Natural History, Museum of Art, Western Reserve Historical Society, and the Botanical Gardens and Glass House), tickets to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, or a dinner at L’Albatros.
Where there is a certain allure to reserving a hotel downtown in Cleveland, the simple fact is that the University Circle is a vibrant and happening area. The experience that one has when they spend a night at the Glidden House is unparalleled, representing the best time that we have spent in a Cuyahoga county hotel room. Getting a room at the hotel should be a no-brainer if a trip to the JACK Casino, the Quicken Loans arena, or Progressive Field is in the cards. If you find yourself in Cleveland this year, check the Glidden House for availability; the experience that you will have at this hotel is world-class. The Glidden House’s website possesses all the information that one could want concerning room amenities, prices, booking the hotel for private events, and a reservation system that is extremely easy to utilize.
