Seconds Before Landing The Great Deception CD Review

What Could It Be? is the initial track on The Great Deception, and it provides ample background for listeners. Touching upon the Roswell alien crash, What Could It Be? links organic and human elements with a more tranc-y, out of this world instrumentation. Instructions immediately brings listeners into a style that fans of Styx and Utopia would appreciate. Seconds Before Landing touch upon a wide array of influences from the 60s (psychedelic), 70s (prog-rock), and even touch upon industrial (Nine Inch Nails) and hard rock.

They’re All Around You is a transitory track for The Great Deception, and showcases a reversal of fortune between the humans and the aliens. What was very much an Army operation in What Could It Be?, changes by the time that They’re All Around You begins.

Mikey Get Your Accordion is the penultimate track on The Great Deception, and showcases an introspective and touching side to Seconds Before Landing. The track links together two disparate elements of rock in the stylistic mash-up of Queensryche’s Silent Lucidity and David Bowie’s Space Oddity. The inclusion of a very authoritative and patrimonial vocals will appease fans of Pink Floyd’s The Wall and Alice Cooper’s role as Father Sun in Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Pick up a copy of The Great Deception from Seconds Before Landing’s Bandcamp (secondsbeforelanding.bandcamp.com/) or on their iTunes; if you are a fan of rich instrumentation, an alluring store, or of rock generally, you will absolutely love The Great Deception.

Great Northern Porter Review

While there seems to be a desire for individuals to want the lighter and more fruit-flavored beers during the summer months, I feel that porters provide a perfect counter-point to a big meal or long day of work. Summit’s Great Northern Porter is a rich brew that pours with an intimidatingly dark head and body. The lacing that remains stands in stark opposition to the dark coloration of the brew, sticking around until one finishes their glass. The hints of toasted malt, coffee, and even hints of smoke are moderated by a slight sweetness with an initial sip. Rather than go too heavy on the brown sugar notes, Summit has placed the perfect amount of hop bitterness into the beer – at 45 IBUs, the Great Northern can be appreciated by the widest array of beer fans.

The Great Northern has a small amount of carbonation, which highlights the smooth complexion of the porter. Summit has crafted a high-octane session effort in this beer, allowing imbibers to polish off a few beers with relative ease.

Make sure to visit the Summit website for more information about their year-round and seasonal efforts. Summit was one of the earliest microbreweries and continues to provide imbibers with memorable efforts; pick up a six pack of the Great Northern Porter or another Summit effort and your local beer store.

The Producers Blu-Ray and DVD Combo Pack Review

The original 1968 film of The Producers is a classic title, showcasing Mel Brooks, Gene Wilder, and Zero Mostel in a deliriously funny and off-the-wall look into the Broadway of the 1960s. When Max Bialystock (Mostel) and eir accountant (Wilder) learn that making an unsuccessful Broadway show is more financially lucrative than dealing with a long-haul release, Springtime For Hitler is born. The machinations of Bialystock and Bloom are thwarted when the show is successful beyond their wildest dreams.

The Blu-Ray edition of the film provides individuals with an absolutely beautiful video print of the original, allowing the sets and outfits worn by the crew to shine. The audio quality of the Blu-Ray edition is similarly strong, with Shout Factory providing viewers with the option to experience The Producers with the original mono or re-done DTS-HD Master Audio.

The combo pack contains a number of special features. A brief deleted scene provides additional room for Kenneth Mars’ Franz Liebkind to shine, while a set of trailers showcase a collection of titles having to do with Mel Brooks (along with a trailer for The Producers, there are brief looks into The Incredible Mel Brooks and American Masters’ Mel Brooks: Make A Noise). A sketch gallery shows the transitory state between the script and the finished product, while a documentary (“The Making of the Producers”) is a valuable view into the conditions lending themselves to the creation of the movie. The Producers’ Blu-Ray and DVD Combo Pack is the definitive version of this classic. The release can be purchased anywhere that sells movies.

Newland Volume 3 Mixtape CD Review

Various_Artists_Newland_Vol_3-front-large

There is a high amount of energy that is present on this mixtape, and a considerable portion of that comes from the work of DJ Malone. Where the most common mixtapes around have DJs touting themselves at the expense of the songs that listeners want to hear, there is a much more organic feel to the compilation of cuts here. What DJ Malone Productions does here is blend the hottest hits (We Up, Memories Back Then, No New Friends) with some absolutely scorching new tracks (Bravo Starr – Watch It Add Up, Mays – You Mad). The flow of the mixtape will keep a party lively, representing a wide array of distinct rap genres.

Newland Volume 3 is a mixtape that helps the up and coming rappers by  placing them front and center (rather than at the ending) of the disc. By doing this, the inimitable styles of Tenf Letta (I’m Riding) and B-Stacks (Ironic) can be heard by a completely new audience. Newland Volume 3 also succeeds as it does not veer into the more experimental efforts of rappers – the tracks present here are absolutely catchy, are the songs that listeners want to hear, and may otherwise be hard to hear (Beyonce’s H-town remix of I’ve Been On).

Make sure to add him on Twitter, visit his Facebook at t.co/WevL8EfCfj, or email him directly at dj_malone88@live.com. The Newland Volume 3 mixtape can be downloaded from DatPiff (www.datpiff.com/DJ-Malone-Newland-Vol-3-mixtape.487272.html).

My Morning Jacket Segment To Run On “CBS Sunday Morning With Charles Osgood”

Serena Altschul goes back to the Kentucky farm where My Morning Jacket formed their signature sound and learns they take cues from an unlikely source – “The Muppets” – in an interview for this week’s CBS SUNDAY MORNING WITH CHARLES OSGOOD, to be broadcast June 30, 2013 (9:00 AM, ET) on the CBS Television Network.

Critics have called My Morning Jacket one of the greatest live bands ever. They found their sound, bandleader Jim James says, playing in silos on a farm in Louisville, Ky., where they could play as loud as possible.

“The various major studios all had their echo chambers that they’re known for, so I thought, ‘Well, we’ve got these giant silos that sound amazing. Why not use them as our chambers?’” James tells Altschul during a tour of the farm. “It’s got a beautiful sound. A dirty floor, but a beautiful sound.”

That sound has earned the band great critical acclaim, and their last album Circuital reached the top ten on the Billboard charts.

But it’s more than the silos that helped inspire the band as James admits Roy Orbison’s voice and “The Muppets” have influenced him.

James says his first experience with music was watching the show. “Like, that was the first time I ever knew what music was,” he tells Altschul.

James released his first solo album, Regions of Light and Sound of God, earlier this year. For more information on the album and his solo performances please visit jimjames.com.

Kelsea Little Personal Myth CD Review

images (1)

Kelsea Little begins Personal Myth with Blue Feather, a track that has a delightful sound. Little allows the instrumentation on this introductory effort to keep up with her effervescent and bubbly style. What results with the beginning of Personal Myth is nothing less than impressive – It Hasn’t Gone Away looks back into fifties rock just as much as it touches upon a current and contemporary singer-songwriter sound. Little’s vocals take on an instrumental feel that provides an increase to the complexity to the effort. To properly get what all Little has placed into this effort, listeners will have to spin Personal Myth a number of times. Walnuts in Peru, one of the longest tracks on Personal Myth, is a hard nut to crack. Puns aside, the complex array of styles broached by Little during this cut makes for a heady and cerebral experience for fans. I feel that much of Personal Myth can be enjoyed simply as individual efforts, but that there is much more to enjoy if listeners can sit down and focus on the album from start to finish.

Now is All We Have is an uptempo cut that blends together lively drums with a clap-track; far from left field, the track further solidifies the later registers of Little’s Personal Myth. Little’s newest can be purchased at her Bandcamp (kelsealittle.bandcamp.com/album/personal-myth ); keep an eye on Little in the months and years to come. If subsequent efforts are as compelling and as fun as Personal Myth, I am sure that she will be a hot commodity in the near future.

In A Perfect World was released in the UK and Europe last week and debuted at #1 in Ireland, #3 in the UK and in the Top 10 in the Netherlands.  On the iTunes Chart the album debuted in the Top 20 in Singapore (#1), Holland, South Africa, Switzerland, Malaysia, Hong Kong, New Zealand, France and Sweden.

“All I Want” has received early support from SIRIUS-XM (SPECTRUM and ALT NATION) and has enjoyed several television and ad campaign placements including Google’s 2012 “Year In Review online spot”,an episode of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, the series premiere for NBC’s new show Ready For Love and was also the featured music bed for the promo spot for ABC’s hit television show Modern Family. Hailing from Dublin, Kodaline are childhood friends Steve Garrigan (lead vocals) Mark Prendergast (guitarist), Jason Boland (bassist) and Vinny May (drummer). Steve and Mark met at the age of 7 in the school choir and forged a close musical bond learning to play guitar together, growing up just minutes apart. They encountered Vinny playing with another band in their early teens and quickly recognised his talents. Jason completed the line-up in 2011, and Kodaline was born.

The band was recently nominated for MTV UK’s “Brand New: for 2013″, as well as BBC’s “Sound of 2013.” “All I Want” was a featured track on BBC Radio 1 DJ Fearne Cotton’s Record of the Week. The band will play a number of UK and European festivals over the summer which kicked off with a sold out performance at Paradiso in Amsterdam and includes performances at Glastonbury, Reading and Leeds and are on the bill supporting Bruce Springsteen in London.

Ayron Michael Unleashed CD Review

Ayron_CD_Cover

Have It Your Way is a track that touches upon the work of Akon, Ne*yo, and Chris Brown. There is a certain twinkling nature to the track that will appease any fans of R&B. Michael’s vocals here could easily make it onto pop rotation, while the production pushes his vocals into an entirely separate realm from the average R&B fodder. One Night brings things back to a more time-tested tradition, with a R.Kelly meets “Confessions”-era Usher. The twinkling instrumentation and addition of Millaman to this track makes the effort into another single.

Medicine is a track that is contemporary as all get out, with the track adopting a middle-ground between EDM and R&B. Michael’s vocals shine through as the brightest point of the song, but the dance backdrop could easily be the work of a Benny Benassi. Hero (featuring Erim Cicek) is a harder track, providing listeners with a decidedly different facet of Michael’s musical persona. The track is tied to the rest of Unleashed through the sheer amount of work that has been put into the effort. Every beat, note, and lyric combines to provide listeners with something that is absolutely unparalleled in current music.

Make sure to check Michael’s website for more information about his current music, links to a variety of Michael’s videos, and the ability to sign up for his newsletter. If Unleashed is any sort of indication, Ayron Michael’s star will only shine from here; tell your local radio stations to start spinning cuts from Unleashed  today.

Cayman Jack Hand Crafted Margarita Review

377736_10151447340244394_437315600_n

There have not been any bottled margaritas that been wowed me. Every time that I have purchased one, there just seems to be something off about the effort. This means that some efforts go overboard on the lime flavoring, while others just miss the mark entirely. We were lucky enough to receive a sample of the Cayman Jack Hand Crafted Margarita (which is available at a wide array of stores), and can say that it is as close to an island margarita that we have ever had. Each Cayman Jack Margarita clocks in at 5.9% (about the alcohol content of an ice-brewed beer) and is able to provide a substantial blast of tequila, lime, and even hints of sugar.

The alcohol content of the Cayman Jack Hand Crafted Margarita is sufficiently low that a 6 pack could easily be split between a couple, while a proper chill on the bottle will make for an incredibly refreshing way to wind down a day. We would love to see Cayman Jack create additions to the Margarita line, perhaps throwing a fruit-infused variant into the mix. For those that have had the Cayman Jack Hand Crafted Margarita, what do you think?

Brownstone Beer Review

images

Brownstone is an amazing brown ale, blending sweetness with a bite. Sixpoint is pegged at 6.0%, a shade higher than most brown ales. I feel that the additional alcohol works nicely with hints of fruit and bitterness provided by the hops. There is a decidedly more creamy feel to Brownstone that makes the beer eminently drinkable, a hint to the complexity that is present. As one begins on the second half of Brownstone, a more nutty character becomes evident. This nut flavor is something that will keep imbibers interested in the effort until the can is finished. This means that with additional sips, hints of chocolate, caramel, and even brown sugar can be discerned. The beer was experienced in a pint can, which provides imbibers with a stable flavor profile from beginning to end.

Sixpoint provides an uniquely-flavored take on the brown ale format. Check out the brewery’s website for more information about their releases, events that they have scheduled, and further merchandise that the brewery has for sale. Brownstone will work equally well in the hottest days of summer, the crispness of fall, and even the bitter coldness of the winter months. Visit your well-stocked local beer store and pick up a four pack of Brownstone.

Seconds Before Landing Interview

What specific forces facilitated the creation of Seconds Before Landing?

I had just finished up a project that I had created, called “Mister C’s Beginning Drums.  I, of course being Mister C.

I love what I do so much, I wanted to be able to share some of my enthusiasm with kids.  I created an audio book, and also a Cd Rom, that went over wonderfully.

Once I finished with that, my plan was to go back into my studio and begin writing music for a new album.

I wrote a few tracks, and they sounded really good, but I wasn’t satisfied with the direction they were headed.

Every night I would go home, listen to the tracks and say to myself, “this isn’t me anymore”.   I have more to say now, and these songs are simply not saying it.

After some soul searching, I decided to write an albums worth of material that only mattered to me.

An album that said everything that was on my mind, and that created the ambience and the sounds that were in my head.

The Great Deception is the result.

 Spaceship-and-crows-text-03

How does a track move from initial thought to finished effort?

Keeping in mind, I write completely alone, I spent about 2 years in the studio working 6 days a week.

I began experimenting with sounds, loops, midi keys, you name it.

I tapped on pots and pans, used wind chimes from the backyard….anything I could get my hands on, I recorded and then manipulated the sounds to suit me.

As i did that, my vision on what I wanted to say, and how I wanted to say it became clearer and clearer.

I was beginning to reinvent myself, from a drummer/percussionist, to a composer.

Once I was comfortable, the next step was me creating and recording all of the principal tracks by myself….After that,  I reached out to some wonderful musician friends of mine, who fortunately said yes when I asked them to contribute.

Once their parts were added, I had a nice conversation with Andy Jackson from Pink Floyd fame.  I explained to him my ideas and direction I was heading, and he agreed to master it for me.

I sent all of the files overseas, and after 3 tries, “we” (Andy and I) decided it was ready for release.

I was truly blessed to have some of the finest talent on the planet involved with me on this project.

What artists and styles most influence the band’s overall sound?

Well, reviewers/critics have said that this album has elements of Pink Floyd, a touch of King Crimson, and maybe a few others.

If possible, I both agree, AND disagree with that……

Which musicians (living or deceased) would you most like to play with?

Well, keeping in mind that I am a drummer, as a kid, I was hugely influenced by Carmine Appice, and Tim Bogert when they played together in their band Cactus.

Fortunately I have been able to tell personally them both how I would sit on the floor in front of my parents big box stereo that had  a single 15 inch speaker, and blast One Way Or Another, over and over and over again.

It’s interesting how life works too…….. Years later, Carmine is sitting at my Mom and Dads kitchen table, having breakfast and listening to me ramble about how much I loved him and Tim.

It was one of the greatest moments of my life, and I truly owe it all to Carmines late mom Mary for helping make that happen.

Thankfully for Tim, when I was able to tell him of his influence, I toned it down a bit :)

To really answer your question correctly though, I would have LOVED to play with the original “Funk Brothers”.   Although I am a so called progressive rock guy, my heart truly lies with all of the old music of Motown, Stax, Chess, and the like.

In my opinion, they created the best “groove” music ever.

And, had I been able to, I would have loved to sit beside the late great Joe Morello, just hoping that a speck of his greatness would have somehow attached itself to me.

Listen, there are MANY others who I would love to play with, but the list would be too long for here.

For those that do not know SBL, which one track would you have a potential fan listen to? What does that song say about the band?

Boy, thats a tough one.

I am going to choose “Solitary Man”, and here is why.

When I wrote this one,  I became so lost in this character, that I frightened myself a little bit.

I felt the loneliness, the despair, and the complete isolation of this guy.

I keep the studio dark when I am working.  Too dark some say.

For x amount of moments, i “was” this guy, and it was very hard to resume my day after going that deep inside this character.

And then, when Steve Schuffert added his lead guitar, it really was a moment for me.

Tell us more about the recording process for The Great Deception. How long did it take to completely lay down the album, and how was the dynamic between the members of the band?

Well, my process goes something like this.

I get to the studio by about 11 a.m. each day.   I turn all the equipment on, and just sit there for a few minutes gathering my thoughts.

Then, I say a prayer and begin.

I have an idea where I am heading most of the time, but if I am working on music, and a lyric pops into my head, I immediately stop what I am doing and write it down.

That lyric may change the entire tone and tenor of the day for me.   Without sounding too “hippie-ish, I am all about going with the flow of things.

Once I create all my parts, I usually lay down a scratch vocal, and then present it to whomever I am going to have play on it with me.

All of the guys I have are so talented in their own right,  after just talking a bit, they understand what I am looking for, and their parts(s) are then recorded.

Once all of the music is recorded and in place, I go back and re record my vocal track, and then after that, I begin the mixdown process.

If something needs added, its added.  If something needs subtracted, its subtracted.

Once I get it “close” I send it to Andy.  He works his magic, and then sends it back to me to listen to.

Its at that point, all of the “tweaking” begins.   More reverb on guitar, turn the bass up a bit, etc etc.

I have learned a ton from Andy just by him being patient with me.  I am very appreciative.

What are your most memorable experiences as a band, either live or in the studio?

I would say having Trey Gunn from King Crimson, and Tim Bogert from Beck Bogert & Appice, Cactus etc, say “yes” when I asked them to play on this album with us.

Inside I am still a 12 year old boy.  I am  huge fan of both of these guys, and having them play on music that I have written….having them help shape the sound and direction on a specific track has been very gratifying for me.

Also, i really feel the need to thank my core group of players here as well.

Maurice Witkowski who plays Acoustic Guitar & Rhythm Guitar on the tracks,  as well as Lead Guitar on “They’re All Around You”

Steve Schuffert, who plays all of the remaining Lead Guitar parts.

J.D. Garrison, one of the baddest bass players on the planet.

And last but certainly not least, my 2 amazingly talented background vocalists, Vanessa Campagna, and Carrie Marie Jackson.

Working with these people has been a very memorable experience for me, and I would publicly like to thank them all !

What does Seconds Before Landing contribute to music? How is the music on The Great Deception substantively different from other progressive rock?

Another interesting question….

Of course, I hope Seconds Before Landing has created something that the listener will enjoy sonically.

i “highly” recommend listening to this album with a headset on, to experience it the way it is meant to be experienced.

More importantly for me though, I hope that the subject matter and overall theme of this album makes people “think”.

We are living in troubled times.  Volatile times.  And I do not just mean here in America.  I mean worldwide.

You may be surprised how many emails I receive daily now, people telling me how I have said what was in their hearts.

How the music has touched them in some way.

Not just in the states here either……  Russia by far has embraced this album right away.

Places like China, Brazil, Japan, and on and on, have reached out to me by the hundreds, telling me that they understand my message.

I spent a long time alone writing this material.  Truth be told, sometimes you ask yourself at various points, “will people get this” ?   “Will they understand what I am trying to get across here” ?

Thank God for the musicians I worked with on this project.  I could always call them and vent.

Each one always gave me the nudge of support I needed at that time, and I cant thank them enough.

Also, DaraD, Riaan, Boz, Bill Harding, and Patty…….  The project would have never made it to this stage without your support, and I thank you as well.

Thats what we contributed here….. A body of work that tells a story, and sounds sonically great.

What does the rest of 2013 hold for you, and how can readers connect with your band and your music?

Right now, a conceptual video is being made for the track “Welcome, To The Future”.

I received and approved the treatment about a week ago, so production is just beginning.

I’m very excited about presenting the music this way.   Assault the senses !!

I am already writing for the 2nd Seconds Before Landing album.  It takes me a long time to do it, and do it correctly, so I figured I better get right back to work.’

There are no plans to tour this first album.    The production would be so big, and costs so high, that it just isn’t the right thing for us to do right now.

The road is in our future, but not till after album 2.

For people who would like to connect with us now, we have a variety of ways….

Email @ sblmusic@aol.com

And the music is available @ www.secondsbeforelanding.bandcamp.com     as well as itunes, amazon, cdbaby, and most other digital outlets.

We truly appreciate all of the support that has been shown for this album early on.   Thank You !!!     John Crispino.

Howard Salmon and Deborah Martin-Lemmon Old Habits are Hard to Break CD Review

DEM-0550-Old-Habits-COVER-sm

Old Habits are Hard to Break is the latest effort by Howard Salmon and Deborah Martin-Lemmon, and it represents an album that is continually hooky and infectious. Take Me Down is a current take on the halcyon days of nineties countries. The lively arrangement of the track allows for a walking bass line, dual vocals, and strings to push each other to a higher plateau. One of these Days slows things up, allowing for a more traditional (Johnny Cash) type of feel to dominate. The Message may be five minutes, but there is more than enough meat on the song’s bones. The narrative fullness of this cut separates it from an already-solid opening. Salmon and Martin-Lemmon are able to take on the most disparate set of country influences, restoring their previous luster and contributing greatly to their catalog.

Old Habits are Hard to Break creates a timeless bit of Americana, resounding loudly before Deborah’s vocals begin. The production allows this track to be utterly at home in the seventies and eighties, while Salmon and Martin-Lemmon’s skill make this a song that any fan of music will be able to appreciate. Old Habits are Hard to Break is a solid album through the end, with the final two tracks (Travelin’ Tune and Let’s Just Call It A Night) placing an emphatic exclamation point on a solid album.

Old Habits are Hard to Break can be purchased on the band’s CD Baby (www.cdbaby.com/cd/deborahmartinlemmon); visit the act’s website for more information about live dates and new music.

Born Cages Don’t Look Back 7" Review

Razor & Tie has been stocking their bull pen lately with a slew of metal and hard rock bands, so the recent signing of punk-tinged, synth indie rockers Born Cages was a bit surprising, in that they sound nothing like a majority of their label mates. But if this two song 7” is any indication, someone at Razor & Tie A&R needs a promotion or at the very least an edible arrangement.

Side A’s “Don’t Look Back” is soaring guitars and soaring vocals begging for an arena to break out of. Side B is a demo version of “Mark On Me,” a much slower, rawer song (demos usually are) but still a very strong offering. The band has a new EP out this month so expect to hear much more from this foursome throughout the summer.

Sucka Brown Extra Medium CD Review

Sucka Brown plays a style of dance-punk that recalls the supersonic vocals of many emo bands while the music contained on “Extra Medium” really drives near to both dancemo bands like Head Automatic and indie-cred dance like Fischerspooner and The Postal Service. The incorporation of reggae influence on tracks like “Public Transportation” seems to be a little out of context; while it bookends the dance elements, it becomes prevalent on different tracks throughout “Extra Medium’s” runtime. The same 311 style of laid-back reggae seems to lack a certain drive to it; “Cognizant Paranoi” really is trying to find anything to hold onto until the band stumbles upon a Switchfoot (Learning To Breathe) type of guitar riff.

extra-medium-sucka-brown-cd-cover-art

The lead vocals that come through seem not just cultured by 311, but rather contain some of the supersonic sweetness of a younger Geddy Lee. The only discernible problem during tracks like “Cognizant Paranoi” seems to be this minor delay where the band needs to figure out in which of the myriad of directions it wishes to go .The thick bassline of “Flatout” has not been matched in sheer soul since the backing bass of early Michael Jackson; the slow-tempo, warmed-over vocals of the act finally gain a catchiness after the bass line takes off and achieved a differing, hooky nature. “Wait” is the unholy bastard child of Snow and O.A.R.; it is not inaccurate to say that the track is the aural equivalent of “Informer” and “Revolution”, coupled with the pseudo-rap that is present in acts like Slightly Stoopid and Sublime. There seems to be a delineation made on “Extra Medium” that pits the distinctive instrumentation with a set of vocals that are incredibly common; the beats will provide a very danceable beat while the vocals seem to be more of a placeholder than anything.

Sure, there are times when the vocals achieve an Incubus-like luster, but many of the slower tracks really show the vocals spinning their wheels. The mixture of simple and complex is made extremely well during a later track (“Fall Classic”) where the bass line works on the highest level and the ska/reggae sound of the guitar ties in many extra listener. To give the track a full feeling, the incorporation of vocals is made. However, the guitar/bass dynamic is more than worthy enough to stand on its own. Fun music, but not necessarily challenging at all points on the disc.

Sucka Brown Demo EP CD Review

Its almost like Scott Stapp has came and started playing with the rest of 311 – at least, that’s what the first track, “Save the Fool” sounds most similar to. The interesting drum arrangements on “Save the Fool” look back to the long list of genre-bending bands like Janes Addiction and Crazy Town for inspiration, and while the track is fairly versed in the mainstream, it enjoys much greater agency than a number of mainstream rock bands would. The continual shifting through genre, whether it be the almost Zach De La Rocha-esque vocal delivery during the bridge or the stutter-step assault with the drums, is one of Sucka Brown’s strongest suits. The slowed-down tempo of “Gravity My Enemy” shows exactly how important the idea of title is to the band – the gravity of the track holds them down and makes what could really be an enjoyable track into one that plods on and is on the slightly tedious side. As usual, the mastering of “Gravity My Enemy” is impeccable, with the finished product being something like the average fair on pop-alternative and light-rock stations.

Finishing out their EP with a track in which the best factors of both of the previous tracks are both in force, “Appleseed” creates some dramatic tension and is almost brooding before the sharp guitar lines before the chorus kick in. The chorus on “Appleseed”” is a pefect example of how the previously-perfect mastering falls away and doesn’t caress the band’s sound as much as it needs to be. Instead, the production opens up and the guitar work on the track seems to reverberate willy-nilly through the entire track. Sucka Brown’s arrangement during the track is a little suspect as well – in a track where they’ve been building up for the inevitable climax, the penis that is represented by Sucka Brown’s music isputters its load all over itself in terms of the unused potential. If things were a little more tight, the tempo a little more removed from the slowish fare of the rest of the track, “Appleseed” would be a track for the ages. The laid-back nature of the band may allow for some different sounds and previously unseen arrangements, but cripples them at the money shot – if allowed to just tear up the rest of the track with a sizzling guitar solo, Todd would have catapulted the track to the next level. Keep an eye on Sucka Brown, though – their music is catchy, even if they take erroneous paths at times.

DJ Fred Malone Interview

djfredmalone

For over a decade DJ Fred Malone has been playing all type of events, parties, weddings, & clubs, everything you could think of. He started at a very young age and despite adversity & uncertainty in his family life, DJ Fred Malone stayed determined to master his craft. Now, In addition to DeeJaying, he works with underground rappers through his production company to help them get the attention they deserve.

So how did it all begin? What made you want to become a DJ?

I started at a young age, about 12yrs old. I grew up in a tough area with gangs, drive-bys, increasing crime rates and violence. Instead of hanging with the boys after school you could catch me in the basement mixing on the turntables. I had a mentor & teacher named DJ Stormy. I would see how other DJ’s were so into it whenever they were on the turntables, beat mixing, or being a hype man. Also, Seeing people having a good time with the music and the DJ being the main influence of it, made me want to DJ..

In May 2002, at 15 years old I stepped into the booth for the 1st time and ROCKED the show. I loved that feeling of make people have a good time. After the gig people came up to me & asked who I was and said “you rock” “you did your thing boy” and I thought to myself hmm, I might have something going on here.

What’s the best event you’ve played at?

Fuel Cyber Café, it was a very large club & could fit well over 400. It was 2007 and I was 19 at the time. It was a 21 and up club so I was most likely the youngest one there. To this day I remember that because the club was set up to where I could look over every one. And as I played my set I was really going ham on the CDJs, people loved it. After awhile everyone just started chanting my name. It was a great feeling. It seemed like I could make the crowd do whatever. It was like I had them in the palm of my hand. We all had a good time. It stands out to me the most because that felt like the MOMENT that I arrived on the scene in a lot of people’s minds. My name was made that night. I’ve played several clubs in Houston Texas, Night Moves, Club Intense, Magics, & Club Fantasy. I’ve also played in Chicago, and other area’s.. I’ve also played at over 30 weddings and numerous basement parties and halls.

What genres of music do you spin and on what equipment?

I play all kinds of music. From rap, trance, top 40, rock, pop, country, oldies, whatever you ask for I will play. I was always taught the more you play the more venues you can open for.

I use a Numark NS7. I was taught on Vinyl but never really got into it. I always was a CDJ type of dude. My 1st mixer was a Gemini CD dual layer from Radio Shack. I have over 10,000 CD’s and Mp3’s in my repertoire.

How is the DJ scene in your eyes at the moment?

It’s greedy for DJS. It’s like they don’t want to just help the artist anymore. It’s kind of like a rapper gives a tape to a DJ, and then the DJ is firing back saying here, listen to my mix tape as well. I understand everyone needs to get noticed but the thing is as the DJ your job is to let the streets know WHAT’S hot and what’s new.

Are there any DJ’s out there that you respect & would aspire to be compared to?

DJ Scratch, DJ Kid Capri, Jam Master Flex, & DJ Screw to name a few.

Tell us about your Production Business & some of the artists you’ve worked with.

DJ Malone productions, was a DJ service that grew into a full production company. We produce songs, albums, & make beats. We host mix tapes and promote artists. I have a team of guys and we’ve worked with some notables such as F.O.E from Houston TX, & Kroosh from New York. People say “I get a good vibe” coming to DJ Malone Productions. The company serves the cities of Chicago, Kansas City, Houston, and surrounding areas.

How can people check out your skills and connect with you?

My mixtapes are on Coast 2 Coast and can be heard spinning on Urban Indie Radio-L.A. You can catch my Blog talk show “Malone’s Hype Line” Mondays Wednesdays Fridays at 930pm Central @www.blogtalkradio.com/dj_malone . I can also be reached through social networking on twitter@djmalonepro, &, facebook/djmalonepro or my website www.dmpproductions.net.

Babble Bread and Circuses CD Review

Tied To The Machine is a funky bit of electronic-infused rock, ensuring to please fans of acts as disparate as Nine Inch Nails and Siouxsie and the Banshees. There is a certain tribal element that further fleshes out this effort; Babble creates a track that crosses easily across thirty years of gothic-tinged music. Yeah Sure No Problem allows the tribal element to become dominant, allowing for a world music flair to dominate. The narration presented by the lead singer is reminiscent of The Doors, Alice Cooper and Joe’s Garage-era Zappa. Yeah Sure No Problem is a special track, as Babble is able to utilize two vocals to great effect.BABBLE-723_6e1daa6a580772c1d5057602cd4230b9

Psychiatry is a track that has a desert rock meets hippie feel; the introductory sound of the band is further varied with the scintillating and shifting instrumentation that flitters at the track’s higher registers. Down in the Dark Woods will show listeners that Babble is an eclectic band, free to change their sound on a dime. Where many albums tend to focus on a specific range of styles and approaches, Babble are able to keep things fresh and fun. What the band does on their Bread and Circuses album is create an immersive environment that will stand up to repeated listens. Down in the Dark Woods is great as it unites the constituent elements of Bread and Circuses into one fulfilling and catchy effort.

Bread and Circuses is an innovative album, touching upon a wide variety of styles and influences. Make sure to check out Babble’s website for more information about the collaborative project Bread and Circuses show and other Babble gigs. www.reverbnation.com/babble

The Submarines Declare A New State CD Review

153172390submarines-declare-a-new-state_jpg_300x300_crop-smart_q85

“Peace and Hate” is the perfect opening for The Submarines, as it shows their ability to create a catchy indie-rock track that continues pushing on listeners even though the tempo is slower than many comparable songs. The inclusion of airy guitars during the track will make individuals remember acts like The Red Hot Valentines, while the blend of vocals scream The Anniversary. While the second set of vocals drops out for “Clouds”, the compelling nature of The Submarines continues.

The band’s unorthodox instrumentation and arrangement during the track still will bring individuals into a well-traversed field. This time, the band firmly plants itself in a brand of indie rock that was popular in the early to mid nineties. The scattershot that The Submarines make on their target is very close; the album is self-contained and cohesive. Individual tracks can be taken in an episodic fashion, or individuals can listen to the entirety of the disc and pick up some nuances that merely listening to single tracks will not reveal. At some point, The Submarines are probably the band that makes the road to stardom seem easily; with each track a piece of indie-rock brilliance, the band seems to be flying high on “Declare A New State”. The deliberate stretching of the tempo during “Hope” is a perfect counterweight to the title emotion. Everything seems so mechanical and depressing during the track, even as the dreamy and soft-spoken vocals seem to shed some sunlight on the gloom of the instrumental arrangements.

The disc may only run for about forty minutes, but “Declare A New State” is an album that can be played back to back indefinitely. The songs are not throw-away pop creations, but are richly ornamented with layers and layers of instruments and vocal nuances. The Submarines come up with an album that speaks to all who listen in; this may be the most heart-breakingly honest indie album of the year. This is not the angular rock of acts like Franz Ferdinand, and it is not the faux-arena rock of acts like Keane; this is an expansion upon what acts like Radiohead did in the nineties and Sigur Ros did in the early two-thousands, albeit modified for a current audience. The Submarines flirted with brilliance a number of times during the album, but the real test will be whether the band can expand on this sound and continue this trend both in live and future studio settings.

Labrada Lean Body Gold Protein Bar Review

leanbodygold

The great thing about the Lean Body Gold protein bar has to be the triple-layer design; this means that there is a layer of peanuts on the top, followed up by a layer of strawberry jelly and a cookie center that will absolutely appease any fans of cookie dough. What results in the Lean Body Gold protein bar is something that will easily replace a meal; while the bar itself may only be about 3 ounces, it will stick with individuals to provide additional energy throughout a considerable portion of the day.

Each Peanut Butter & Jelly bar contains 25 grams of protein in each bar with about 350 calories. There are 12 grams of fat (6 grams of saturated fat), on about 490 mg of sodium. The body is rounded out with the inclusion of a substantial portion of Vitamin A (4% RDV), Vitamin C (2%), Calcium (12%) and Iron (11%). For those that are on a diet, I would strongly suggest that one swaps out one of their meals for a Lean Body Gold bar, as each bar is considerably lower in fat, sodium, and carbohydrate content than alternative options.

Make sure to check out their website for more information about their product lines and the products that they will be releasing through the end of 2013 and into 2014, along with the ability to sign up for their online newsletter. For those fans of the Lean Body Gold Protein bar, individuals can also purchase caramel peanut and s’mores delight flavors of the Lean Body Gold bars (the specific nutritional data cited here only corresponds to the Peanut Butter and Jelly flavor.

Big Bear Black Stout Review

1658

This imperial stout is one of the most memorable that we have experienced; Bear Republic has created a delectable array of styles and flavors with the Big Bear Black Stout. Served cold in a 22 ounce bottle, the beer pours incredibly dark, with a small, tan head sitting on the top. As one continues to drink the Big Bear Black Stout, a light amount of lacing will occur. When individuals are able to experience the Big Bear Black Stout, what they will experience is something that touches upon fruit flavors of figs and raisins. Additional sips will present chocolate, roasted malts, and even the brief hint of coffee to imbibers. The mouthfeel is light and substantive, and the overall bouquet of tastes will stick with imbibers for a decent bit after each pull.

The 22 ounce size of the Big Bear Black Stout is perfect for a session. If an individual can leisurely sip the stout, they will have a tremendous experience and be transferred to a warm, comfy space.

Make sure to pick up a bottle of the Big Bear Black Stout if you wish to have something that expands the style, while remaining utterly true to the format. Visit their website if you would like to have an idea of what efforts that Bear Republic are currently releasing, and what will be on the slate for the months to come.

Clip DVD Review

Clip is a DVD that focuses on the seedy underbelly of eastern Europe, all while making the actions taken by Jasna (Isidora Simojonivic) commonplace to anyone that has had to deal with the troubles of being a teenager. Fans of Skins, Trainspotting, and Kids will be able to sink their teeth into Clip. Viewers will be shocked at the lengths that Jasna will go to run away from the tumultuous swirl of emotions that comprise the pubescent years. The cast seems to mesh together better than on many films; there is a frenetic energy that is captured that would be impossible to merely act. One gets a sense that by the end of the Clip filming that there were bonds created between each of the film’s characters. As Jasna’s life continues to spiral away from eir, Clip takes a considerably darker turn. Milos does a tremendous job in showcases the negative ramifications of Jasna’s actions, and does not provide the sort of anti-hero feel that permeates a great deal of cinema focusing on the issues of young adults.

46915_498836690177594_1112310524_n

Clip comes with a few bonus features. This means that there are trailers for the film, a booklet that goes into detail about Cluip, and an interview set up with director Maja Milos. I feel that the interview is absolutely integral for anyone that wishes to get the backstory behind the film.

FlatWave Amped Antenna Review

The sheer thinness of the FlatWave Amped ensures that it can be placed up at any position. The antenna allows for HDTV signals to be picked up to a range of 50 miles, a considerable increase over TV antennas and off-the-shelf offerings. The cable that Winegard provides is long enough to place the antenna in a spot with the greatest reception, while the antenna is dual-band. The dual-band designation is important, as the FlatWave Amped can pick up a variety of signals. The antenna has an absolutely stellar reception and will pick up a number of signals.

When we were testing the product, we were able to receive signals from Cleveland, Akron, Canton, and Youngstown. The collection of channels that were available to us were comparable to other dish and cable providers; Winegard has ensured that their FlatWaved Amped would be paid for after the first month with this strong transmission quality, incredible amount of channels, and ease of use and installation.

The FlatWave Amped comes with a full 90 day warranty, ensuring that an individual will be able to return the product should there be some sort of issue with the workmanship or defects present. The FlatWave Amped can be purchased directly from Winegard for $89.99, and full instructions and features are readily accessible from the Winegard website. Make sure to check out the Winegard website for more information about the company’s list of products. We’ll be using the FlatWave Amped for a long time to come.

Clutch Cheater Guilt-Free Baking Mix Review

image_prodprod1230068_largeImage_X_450_white

There are few protein mixes that can be used to created delectable means. Where it has always been a possibility to mix in protein powder to waffle / biscuit mix, there was a pretty good chance that the finished goods would be gritty and otherwise depressing. However, the Cheater Guilt-Free Baking Mix makes for light and fluffy baked goods that still are able to provide the amount of protein that an individual needs to fend off catabolization and build lean muscle. The powder mixes up nicely, ensuring that there will not be a gritty or clumpy quality to whatever is being baked. The company has a great pancake / waffle recipe that ties together the Guilt-Free Baking Mix with oatmeal (2 scoops), 1 egg white, and 1 cup of Almond milk. I would say to finish off these pancakes with some fresh fruit (blackberries or raspberries are in season), and one will have the energy that they need to continue through the day and begin an arduous workout.

Each serving (20 grams) of Cheater has .5 grams of fat, 25mg of sodium, and 3 grams of carbohydrates (1g of dietary fiber); the protein sources here come from pea, rice, brown rice, and hemp proteins and chia seeds. The decision to utilize these sources of protein allows vegans and vegetarians the ability to supplement

Individuals that wish to make breakfast into a much more bodybuilding (and overall health)-friendly experience would do well to purchase a tub of Cheater Guilt-Free Baking Mix. The Clutch Body Shop can be reached at their website or on their Facebook (www.facebook.com/ClutchBodyShop ). Keep an eye on each to see what they will be brewing up in the months and years to come.

Oz the Great and Powerful Blu-Ray Review

Sam Raimi (The Evil Dead, Spiderman) directs Oz the Great and Powerful, a film that stars James Franco and Mila Kunis. Franco is Oscar Diggs, while Kunis is Theodora (The Wicked Witch of the West in the original film). The film is rounded out with the inclusions of Rachel Weisz as Evanora and Zach Braff as Frank (the winged monkey who acts as guide for Diggs). A large heaping of beautifully-designed computer graphics and costuming make Oz the Great and Powerful a fully immersive experience. While the title ends with a solid conclusion, I feel that the realm that L. Frank Baum created with eir Land of Oz could be more fully captured with additional titles in this franchise. Viewers young and old will appreciate what Disney has done here, and will be similarly impressed with the treatment that this combo pack (Blu-Ray, DVD, and Digital Copy) has gotten.

There are a number of bonus features that are present on the Oz the Great and Powerful combo pack. The bloopers will showcase a more human side to the cast and the cry, while there is a historical feature that delves into Walt Disney’s fascination with the Oz mythos. Before Your Very Eyes: From Kansas to Oz is an all-too-brief view into the design that melded and ultimately created the world of the film. Finally, limited editions of this combo pack come with a free movie admission to Disney’s The Lone Ranger, which will be in movie theaters on July 3rd.

The Oz the Great and Powerful combo pack can be purchased at a wide selection of video stores and from any online retailer that deals with movie releases. Visit the Disney website for a number of additional activities and further information about their properties.

Alpine A Is for Alpine Review

Alpine-A-Is-For-Alpine

Lovers 1 has Alpine washing gently over listeners, their music linking together bands as The Polyphonic Spree and The Flaming Lips. The patently different Lovers 2 links Disintegration-era Cure guitars with a haunting, Bjork-esque set of vocals. Hands is an early stand-out, with the instrumental and vocal sides of Alpine uniting to create something equally at home on pop rotation and indie blogs.

A Is for Alpine is an album that works perfectly as a collection of singles or as an unified effort. The band is able to insert a wide variety of influences and styles, which have the effect of luring in a wide collection of fans. Seeing Red is a perfect example of this, as Alpine caters to new wave, indie rock, alternative, and even electronic before the end of the song. All For One is the disc’s stand-out track. The twinkling guitar that operates behind the trancy, haunting vocals establishes an environment that is completely immersive. While the song ends at the three and a half minute mark, I feel that this epic composition will stick with listeners long after A Is for Alpine ceases.

A Is for Alpine ends with Multiplication, an effort which has a sedate sound that elicits both the new age era of the eighties and the alt-rock (Paula Cole) of the nineties. A Is for Alpine can be purchased at any well-stocked music store or online retailer; visit their website for more tour and band information. Here’s to hoping that Alpine has a long and storied career; their fresh take on music provides the perfect summer soundtrack.

Lisa Lim S/T CD Review

image-248699-full

Superstitious Mind deftly blends country and hard rock, providing listeners a perfect introduction to Lim’s rich set of tracks. My Perfect World looks back to the days of Joan Jett and even Joni Mitchell / Joan Baez. The hooky style of My Perfect World will resound loudly in listeners’ minds after the disc concludes. Broken Promise Blues is a stand-out track on this album, as it shows listeners a considerably different side of Lim. Coming to bat with a confident, Courtney Love meets Morbid Angel sound, Lim is able make something that finds the soul of the blues from whence rock came.

Perfect Fit ratchets up an early Sheryl Crow sound into something that is tremendously catchy to the widest swath of listeners. The additional cherry on this sundae comes in a raunchy, rocking guitar solo. Distant Second brings the album back to a traditional rock trapping, with the instrumentation providing a considerable boost to Lim’s already stellar pipes. Denial brings Lim’s vocals to a focal point, relegating the instrumentation to a highlighting role; the shift in this balance creates something starkly different from the bulk of the album. What results here is something that recalls desert rock helmed by Patty Smyth, a true high point for this release.

Lisa Lim’s self-titled album stays strong throughout each cut, and it is the wide variety of approaches taken by Lim that provide this release with considerable vitality. The album establishes Lim as a bold and inspired female, supported by musicians of the highest caliber. Further information about Lisa Lim, live dates, and photos can all be found at Lim’s website.

Goose Island 25th Anniversary Ale Review

images (2)

Goose Island is celebrating their 25th Anniversary, and has brewed a special beer to commemorate the occasion. This beer – their 25th Anniversary Ale – is Goose Island’s take on the ESB style. What results in this Anniversary Ale is something that is a complex and intricate experience. The bottle pours nicely, with a large head that sticks around; the beer has an orange / copper hue that makes the head pop brightly. An initial sip will tie together a sweeter opening note with a slight bitterness. Subsequent quaffs will yield hints of caramel, toffee, and hazelnuts. A second facet to the Anniversary Ale will bring forth floral and citrus elements; the beer is tied together with a toasty, malty demeanor.

The 6.4% ABV of the beer provides the perfect amount of warmth to this complex effort. This beer is a taut release, and will appease fans of a great number of styles. Goose Island has made something that is an utter delight to drink, something that is unique while being eminently drinkable.

Goose Island 25th Anniversary Ale can be purchased at well-stocked stores; make sure to purchase a bottle before it becomes hard to find.  A six pack of the 25th Anniversary Ale will set one back about $8. Check out the Goose Island website for more information about the 25th Anniversary Ale and the rest of the brewery’s releases through the year.

bree All American Girl Review

Religious narrow-mindedness, like conservative politicians, has always been a boon for the music world. So when musician bree (no last name necessary) – raised in a religious cult led by her pops where secular music was a no-no  – and was cast out at 17, she naturally she turned to the Devil’s music. And to wildly paraphrase Dusty Springfield, no one rocks as hard as the child of a preacher man.

On All American Girl, her debut, bree brings out the pipes of Pat Benatar and the attitude of Steven Tyler. She also plays a pretty bad ass Gibson Flying V. The record is 11 songs of straight up rock, overflowing with themes of sex, sin and booze (all that’s great about the genre). Among the highlights on the Nashville rockers album are the terminally-catchy “Whiskey” and Cheap Trick-worthy “Do You Want to Love Me”.
