Chicken With Plums focuses on the life of Nasser-Ali Khan, a masterful violin player. When an unfortunate act leaves eir violin in shambles, Nasser-Ali completely gives up on life. Not moving from eir bed, a period of self-realization has to occur to make Nasser-Ali’s life whole again. What Khan ultimately figures out in this dark period is the reason for taking up the violin in the first place. The broken violin represents the love that eir had; rather than suffer, Nasser-Ali realizes that happiness can still lead eir life.  The cast of Chicken With Plums deftly create a narrative that will capture viewers and not let them go until the final credits roll.


Chicken With Plums contains featurettes that further increase the value of this DVD. This means that there is a commentary that is laid down by the directors of the film, Vincent Paronnaud and Marjane Satrapi. What is already a detailed and intricate film in Chicken With Plums is given further depth after one watches the film with the commentary. Further context is provided to the film when viewers take in the question and answer session that occurred at Tribeca; the theme of love representing the fundamental force in living seems to draw back to classic works such as the Odyssey and O. Henry’s “The Gift of the Magi”.

Boundless Potential with Mark Walton DVD Review

Mark Walton is a tremendous resource when it comes to keep individuals active and lively when it comes to their occupation. During Boundless Potential, Walton is able to showcase the steps that individuals need to take to make themselves out to be great hires in this current, post-recession economy. With a greater segment of the workforce possessing a college education, those older workers need to ensure that they are not passed over. I believe the way in which Walton captures this phenomenon on the Boundless Potential DVD will allow viewers to easily understand the information that is provided while maintaining their interest throughout. The feature runs for the entirety of an hour, which captures the major points of Walton while leaving considerable room open for additional volumes of this series.

Walton wants viewers to re-evaluate their life. By moving beyond mere shifts in resumes and increasing familiarity with computers to taking complete stock of one’s life, the shifts that this older segment of workers will take makes sure that they can become employed when they want. Ultimately, this could leads to finding the job that one wishes to end their career with; the individual, rather than the occupation, will determine this.

The DVD comes with additional features which include a set of further Boundless Potential pieces; this DVD should be required watching for those individuals that wish to make the most out of their middle years. Make sure to purchase a copy of Boundless Potential at the PBS shop, to best prepare yourself for the uncertainty that will exist if one’s occupation is unable to be supported.

Rotten Sound Still Psycho EP Review

6 song EP, were founded in Finland in 1993. This is the sixth release by these guys, and the first on Necropolis records. They are a five piece band, and the CD Is definitely too short, as there are six songs in a 16 minute block. That comes out to about 2:40 a song. Very fast tempo on these songs, with unintelligible lyrics and killer guitars. Rotten Sound practically rivals Cannibal Corpse in the speed department, with guttural vocals to match. “Ignorance” begins much more melodic before regressing into more of the some super speed metal. The only thing that this song has of note is the stomping chorus that they have, in which the singers voice can almost be understood. While a new bassist is being touted on the CD cover (Mika Hakki), who replaces Pakka Ranta, who left to move to Helsinki, the capital city of Finland, you can barely hear him. Rotten Sound is another of the European metal bands that already have gained serious recognition relatively early in their years, like the Hellacopters, Gluecifer, and Hypocrisy. By their eighth year they have release their third full length album, numerous EP’s and toured countless other times, so no one can say that this band does not try. “Lack of Awareness” is by far the most radio friendly song that Rotten Sound has on this mini cd, with a slower tempo and much less brutal guitars. Don’t get me wrong there, their music still kicks the ass of a good 90% of all of the metal bands out there now, but it just is a light song for Rotten Sound. I still can not tell if the lead singer is singing in English or in another language To properly finish of this cd, a cover of Carcass’ “Reek of Putrefaction” is on here. The track is very well played, with a much cleaner sound then the rest of Rotten Sound’s song.

DARK POP BAND PLANS CHILDREN'S ALBUM

Known for crafting dark and clever pop songs, Baltimore synth rock band Red This Ever have announced they are working on a children’s album to be titled Quack.

Dungeons of Dread Book Review

 


This book is a compilation of four Advanced Dungeons & Dragons modules (Tomb of Horrors, White Plume Mountain, Expedition to the Barrie Peaks, and The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth). The glossy style of current Dungeons and Dragons releases does these old adventures well, creating something that provides dungeon masters with a much more focused approach than was present during the cardboard / paper module years.


The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth (S4) is my favorite module, blending a proper amount of skill with a compelling narrative. In this adventure, players are brought together with the promise of tremendous wealth. The success of the party will be up to the build of the team (along with some fortuitous dice rolls), along with the creativity and problem-solving skills of the players helming characters. Taken together, these four adventures will provide a playgroup with a number of nights of play.


Make sure to check out the adventures contained in the Dungeons of Dread book and see exactly the level of immersion that AD&D players experienced during their gaming settings in the early eighties. Look to purchase a copy of Dungeons of Dread at your local gaming store; if none are available, the title is readily accessible at a number of online retailers. Strong sales of this effort will ensure that Wizards of the Coast will continue to release the modules and titles that players have been clamoring for; experience this set of retro Advanced Dungeons and Dragons adventures to see exactly why the title received such large support in the years after its initial release.

John Barleycorn Barleywine Ale 2011 Review

There is no sense that this beer is 11.1%. There is a silky smoothness that will draw imbibers in, while the cloying sweetness (and lack of an alcoholic bite) will allow individuals to sip with (measured) abandon.  In the John Barleycorn Barleywine, there is a warming effect that sticks around long after the beer is drank. Hints of caramel, fig and even slight notes of vanilla will appear in each bottle; the ale’s light carbonation provides a stark palette for flavors to be highlighted.


A bitterness is noticeable at the end of each sip, allowing drinkers to experience the beer in a continually new and refreshed fashion. The Barleywine Ale is eminently drinkable alone, but will heighten the flavors and approaches taken in a steak, lamb, or stew style of cooking.


Take a look at the Mad River website for more information about their slate of beers and their overall availability. Pick up a few bottles of the Barleywine Ale and age them to see what exactly this effort does in the time to come; the 2011 is utterly fantastic and should be purchased by any beer fan.

My Dying Bride to release 'The Manuscript' this spring








U.K. doomlord, My Dying Bride, has been imposing its legacy for over two decades, since the debut album As the Flower Withers surfaced in 1992. Now the morose troupe returns with its latest work, ‘The Manuscript,’ set for release on Peaceville Records on May 13, 2013 on CD and vinyl.

 


‘The Manuscript’ contains four new and exclusive songs; a dark voyage spanning over 27 minutes of supreme doom in the unmistakable My Dying Bride style of heaviness mixed with dark tales of foreboding. It was recorded and mixed at Futureworks Studios in Manchester, U.K. with the band’s long-time producer, Mags.


 


 



‘The Manuscript’ features four monstrous tracks of brilliantly crafted metal that only My Dying Bride can do, with swathes of doom laden melancholy, harmonic beauty and thundering death metal all combined in its trademark sound.

Sweet Jane Preview Their New Single "I Wanna Be in Love"


What’s becoming known as Sweet Jane’s signature “wall of sound,” is no better demonstrated than on their latest single, “I Wanna Be in Love.” The single is now at radio in Ireland and off of their forthcoming new four song ep “Witches,” scheduled for release on April 19 and on 12” vinyl in May through Reekus Records. Sweet Jane recently showcased at Canadian Music Week in Toronto. Here’s a live review from CMW of Sweet Jane’s show at the Hideout: “Not really psychedelic and not really hard rock, they had a great sound and a very strong vocal presence. The Hideout patrons were grooving to these guys.”


Sweet Jane are four Paxton brothers (Danda on guitar, vocals; Neil on guitar, keys and vocals; Conor on keys and guitar; Ruairi on bass and Donagh O’Brien on drums).



 





In the past year, songs from from their highly acclaimed debut album Sugar For My Soul won competitions to be included on the soundtracks of shows at leading US companies such as MTV and Activision / Blizzard. They were chosen among more than two thousand international entries to win a competition run by NBC Universal at Midem 2012 to have their music included on the soundtracks of shows such as Being Human.


This is what NBC says of their music: “Sweet Jane have beautifully haunting vocals as well as wonderful driving hooks that make them a perfect indie rock candidate across the board.”

TOXIC HOLOCAUST Releases Lyric Video For “Agony of the Damned”

Portland’s favorite punk/metal delinquents TOXIC HOLOCAUST recently unleashed a new lyric video for “Agony of the Damned.” Initially featured on the band’s 2011 Conjure and Command full-length, “Agony Of The Damned” makes an “updated” appearance on the From The Ashes Of Nuclear Destruction compilation, set for release via Relapse Records next month.


 


Elaborates band mastermind Joel Grind: “This version of ‘Agony of the Damned’ was recorded in September of 2010 with a drum machine a few months before we stepped into the studio to record the one that appears on Conjure and Command. When making an album, I usually demo out the entire thing before I step into a studio. This keeps costs low and gives me time to sit with it to iron out the details. Since Conjure and Command was the first TOXIC record to feature a full band, this demo served the purpose of familiarizing everyone with the new material and is previously unreleased.”

Swing Session Saison Beer Review

 


Swing is a wonderful break from the masses of heavy or hoppy efforts that have been everywhere through the fall and winter. Swing, what Victory calls a “session Saison) is pegged at a 4.50% ABV. The hazy initial flow of Swing provides a decently large heads. Initial tastes that become prevalent here include citrus (orange, lemon) and coriander notes and bits of pepper, opening up into something that is ultimately drinkable. The session aspect (manifesting itself as a lower ABV than many Saisons) coupled with the bright and bold flavors of the beer ensures that individuals will be able to put away quite a few before their session ends.


As individuals continue to drink the Swing, a more grain / cereal flavor highlights the aforementioned citrus notes, creating a much more nuanced beer than many saisons currently on the market. Swing can be enjoyed on its own or paired with beef, lamb, or goat; I would venture that it would blend well with seasoned fish. The distinctive flavor of Swing makes into an effort that any fan of saisons or of beers generally should search out whenever they can.

THE MOTH GATHERER‘s music is hard to label, due to band’s non-one-dimensional approach towards the songs they create; the Experimental/Progressive etiquette seems almost too laconic to fully do justice to the spirit of the compositions. The debut offers up long and complex tracks, but still surprisingly simple and compelling. Abundance of tempo changes and variations that surround the album bask in emotionally charged, progressive yet utterly melodic slower-sections, addictive enough to stimulate the imagination.

Hemingway & Gellhorn Blu-Ray Disc Review

 


This drama/romance blend captures the real-life romantic relationship of Ernest Hemingway and Martha Gellhorn. The cast is star-studded (Nicole Kidman, Parker Posey, Clive Owen, Lars Ulrich), while the narrative explains well Hemingway’s creative output during this period of eir life.


HBO has included a number of special features on this Blu-Ray. The audio commentary between Walter Murch (editor) and Philip Kaufman (director) shows that the duo has done their research. For those that wish to know more about Hemingway during this period, watching the commentary provides a considerable amount of additional context to enlighten viewers about the motivation of the titular characters and how exactly reality and film differed. While Hemingway & Gellhorn is not a title that needs crazy special effects or for viewers to be removed from reality, “Behind the Visual Effects” showcases some of the more tricky shots and other difficulties in bringing the plot from paper to silver screen. The Blu-Ray’s last bonus feature is a behind the scenes look (melding together costume and set designs with the decisions to cut specific sequences filmed for the Hemingway & Gellhorn Blu-Ray.


For the best prices, individuals that wish to procure a copy of Hemingway & Gellhorn would do well to search online; a quick scan places this Blu-Ray at a shade under $20. I believe that this film has considerable replay value as the main cast and supporting actors alike do a great job in divorcing themselves from what they have done previously, throwing themselves headfirst into their roles. Hemingway & Gellhorn is one of the strongest titles that we have reviewed this year, and this releases shows why HBO has been at the forefront of original content for the last thirty or so years.

Kayla Stockert Castles in the Sand CD Review

 


Don’t Go Messing With My Heart is the introductory track on Castles in the Sand, with an instrumentation that shines while highlighting Stockert’s imitable vocals. Stockert and the Como Brothers are able to make a very contemporary track built off the doo-wop and country traditions; a wide swath of listeners will be able to find something to appreciate. What They Say is a track that is destined for radio rotation. Stockert’s vocals soar above the track with a melody that will imprint itself deep into the psyche of listeners. Hints of Avril Lavigne and Kelly Clarkson can be heard here, but there is an earnestness to Stockert’s persona that will lure listeners in.

Your Love closes the Castles in the Sand EP, and increases the tempo of the disc considerably. The backing instrumentation takes on a Maroon 5 feel as Stockert shifts from confident to introspective. These different vocal approaches provides greater nuance to this track; listeners will easily be able to identify spots in their own life where they were unsure about the love that they heard. Taken together, the three tracks on Castles in the Sand paint nicely a picture of Kayla Stockert, while providing listeners with tracks that will go down easily and impress musically.

KAYLA SLONE JOINS THE MARSHALL TUCKER BAND ON-STAGE AT GRAND OLE OPRY

This past weekend on the stage of the historic Grand Ole Opry, THE MARSHALL TUCKER BAND performed and welcomed a very special guest on-stage for a little help singing the group’s classic hit, “Can’t You See.”  That special guest was 21-year-old singing Walmart cashier sensation, KAYLA SLONE.


 


“I had seen this girl on the news and when I found out she would be performing on the Opry with us, I knew we had to invite her back out after her set to help us sing ‘Can’t You See,’” says MTB lead singer and founding member Doug Gray.


 


Slone recently made national headlines after a customer recorded her singing while on-duty as a cashier at a Walmart in her home state of West Virginia.  The video recording was uploaded to the Internet and soon attracted the attention of the national media (click HERE for more).  One of Slone’s dreams was to perform on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry.  She was given that opportunity after the Opry contacted her with a personal invite.


 


“It was a real honor to sing on the Grand Ole Opry stage and be a part of a great tradition,” says Slone.  ”It was also a special treat to sing with The Marshall Tucker Band and it goes to show you that dreams really do come true!”


 


Gray notes, “We had so much fun singing with Kayla.  She was a real pro and I know she will go far in this business.  I had chills up and down my spine after hearing her sing!”

Heaven and Hell Records To Reissue FALSE PROPHET Discography

Heaven and Hell Records will be releasing the complete recorded works from North Carolina death thrashers FALSE PROPHET on CD as part of the Lost Relics collection.


 


Formed in the late 1980s FALSE PROPHET would quickly become one of North Carolina’s leading metal bands and grew into one of the East Coast’s most fierce thrash/death metal acts by the early 1990s. Their first self-titled demo, released in 1989, saw the band gain attention throughout the underground. But it wasn’t until the release of their full-length, Second Death, in 1991 that the band began to gain mass critical praise from critics and peers. Many throughout the metal community saw FALSE PROPHET as the next Morbid Angel.


 


The band toured the region playing with such acts as Danzig, Confessor, Forbidden, Demolition Hammer and Dark Angel. They eventually landed a deal with Belgium label Mausoleum Records. Unfortunately an album would never be release. By 1993 the band changed their name to INFERNAL HIERARCHY and released a self-titled, two-song 7″. The band split up shortly there after.


 


Finally this awesome thrash/death metal collection will see a proper release all re-mastered by Jamie King at The Basement Studios in Winston-Salem, NC.

The band has a stranglehold on amped-up hard rock and stripped-down heavy metal, barnstorming stages across the world with its catchy, ass-kicking riffs, unmatched energy, fist-pumping anthems and hyper-agitated live show, led by front man and ringleader Valient Himself, whose highly entertaining, heady lyrics (the singer was once a college professor) become a call to arms for the band’s legions of devoted fans — nicknamed the “Thorriors” — that assemble in chapters and track the band from show to show, town to town. The second part of Into the Rising Sun provides listeners with a considerably different set of instrumental elements than the initial one: Gandalf is able to link together the two through sheer ability, setting up listeners for Reaching for the Sky. Reaching for the Sky weighs in at 9 minutes (the disc’s longest), providing fans with an epic composition. The different movements in this track allow Gandalf ample opportunity to weave in disparate styles and influences. What results in Reaching for the Sky is an effort that stays fresh minute after minute, with a complexity present that affords listeners multiple spins. Dreamweaver is the titular track, and represents the bridge between the first and second parts of the album. The track is relatively short (6:23), but Gandalf’s arrangements during the track provide the song with an authority that lasts long after the last note has ceased.


Dreamweaver’s second half acts nearly as a mirror for the initial offerings; Written in the Stars (Parts 1 and 2) end the track, while Life’s Blossoms touches upon some of the same fertile ground which washed over listeners during Reaching for the Sky. Life’s Blossoms approximates those years of life when everything is going well – one may get their dream job, build a family, and may even go on a vacation. During Life’s Blossoms, Gandalf’s compositions possess rich enough narrative to establish a story that needs no words.

Rivers Of Nihil Wrap Up Tracking Drums For Upcoming Full-Length Debut

Reading, Pennsylvania’s death metal quintet, RIVERS OF NIHIL, recently entered Mana Recording Studios in St. Petersburg with Erik Rutan to record their first full-length album and Metal Blade Records debut, which is due out before the end of 2013. Drummer Ron Nelson checked in after completing tracking the drums and here’s what he had to say:


“Tracking went awesome; we were right on schedule with how we planned it out and everything went smoothly. Erik and I had very similar visions in the way we wanted the drums to sound and he delivered. Although this is our first full-length release, they’re going to be the most natural drums Rivers has had to date and we couldn’t be happier with how they sound.”

About the band:

Formed in 2009 in Reading, Pennsylvania, RIVERS OF NIHIL—which can be can be defined as the continuation of a neutral flow of retaining emptiness; humble, egoless…— took shape after Jake Dieffenbach (vocals), Ron Nelson (drums), and Jon Kunz (guitars) got together to create a band to push the boundaries of death metal. Formed out of the ashes of their previous band, Jake, Ron, and Jon played their first show as a three piece, but soon after the band recruited Adam Biggs (bass/vocals) and Brody Uttley (guitars) who had both recently exited their own old band. RIVERS OF NIHIL went on to self-release two EPs—2010′s Hierarchy and 2011′s Temporality Unbound. The band played several shows and toured throughout the East Coast and Midwest, including stops at Midwest Fuckfest with Dying Fetus, Misery Index and Arsis, and Akron Deathfest with Complete Failure. RIVERS OF NIHIL continued to tour in support of their EPs, sharing the stage with Suffocation, The Faceless, Despised Icon, Revocation, Beneath the Massacre, Dysrhythmia, Decapitated, Six Feet Under, and Decrepit Birth, logging over 50 dates in the US alone.


Enter the summer of 2012; RIVERS OF NIHIL and Metal Blade Records began talks, and in September the band was officially signed to the label. In March of 2013 RIVERS OF NIHIL entered the studio with death metal master Erik Rutan (Hate Eternal, ex-Morbid Angel) at MANA RECORDING STUDIOS (Cannibal Corpse, Goatwhore, Exhumed, Mountain Goats) in St. Petersburg, Florida to begin the recording of their first full-length studio set for release before the end of 2013. Once RIVERS OF NIHIL finish recording they will hit the road to play in front of as many metalheads as possible during the summer and fall to support their upcoming Metal Blade Records debut.

Param Sukh begins Path of the Divine; the narrative qualities of Teredesai’s Bansuri flute provide a cogent and coherent story that is weaved throughout the entirety of the composition. Shakti Dhyana is able to keep close stylistically, despite possessing an outward sound that represents a distinct facet of Teredesai. The tracks on Path of the Divine provide listeners with a brief glimpse into Teredesai the human just as they do Teredesai the artist.


A bright point on Path of the Divine, Bhakti Dnyana brings listeners onto an eight-minute journey through Teredesai’s soundscape. The arrangements (flute and atmospheric noise) provide listeners with a range of complex interactions, establishing the composition as something much greater than its sum of constituent parts. Themes are allowed to properly breathe, allowing Teredesai ample time in-track or through a range of tracks to further elaborate and expand ; the late-disc trilogy of Samarpan, Shoonya, and Shoonya provide a focused shift away from the overall tenor of the introductory efforts. There is a theme of humanity versus the vastness of existence; wide-open tracks work well to highlight every twist and turn that Teredesai’s flute provides to listeners.


The album ends with Dhyana Mudra, an effort that ties together the various styles and approaches created during Path of the Divine. Terdesai will impress over the entirety of the 73-plus minutes, adopting timeless and classical Indian arrangements with something much more contemporary. Make sure to purchase a copy of Path of the Divine when it is released to online retailers and progressive shops on Tuesday, April 23rd. The compositions here work perfectly no matter whether individuals are cleaning, meditating, or are just resting.
