I came into The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey expecting a fairly solid fantasy film but something that would only be a pale shade of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Director Peter Jackson is able to imbue this introductory Hobbit flick with the same gravitas while establish a considerably different feel to An Unexpected Journey. Lord of the Rings had a number of single-film releases before getting a definitive Blu-Ray trilogy release; New Line has immediately released one of the best looking and fullest features that we have been able to see.
Each edition of the film (Blu-Ray 3D, Blu-Ray, DVD, or Ultraviolet) utilizes a great source print; viewers will be floored with the Blu-Ray 3D in terms of its comparability to movie theater quality. The bonus featurettes increase the Combo Pack’s value further; sealed copies will have a code to watch a sneak peek of The Desolation of Smaug. Trailers – both An Unexpected Journey and LOTR gaming related – round out an additional half-hour of footage. A full two hours of vlog coverage helmed by Jackson eirself provides a great amount of backstage information and sets up a timeline of the creative process between April, 2011 to the film’s New Zealand premiere (December, 14th).
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 3D can be purchased at any online video store and at any electronics or video store. Make sure to purchase the 3D Combo Pack to have the ability to watch the film on the widest array of devices. At prices under $30 (on sale), this represents one of the best birthday gifts that a fantasy or LOTR fan can receive.
