Ironwood pours with a very dark brown, nearly black color. The head is pretty thin (about ¼ to ½ of an inch), and is off-white. The initial sip will provide imbibers with hints of chocolate and cocoa, along with a slight hint of sweetness at the end. This allows the 7.0% alcohol percentage to be shrouded perfectly, making for an eminently drinkable effort. As the beer warms up, the dark fruit and coffee elements becomes more prevalent. A slight bit of hops can be discerned here that gradually take a more dominant role as one continues on with the 22 ounce bomber. This is a very approachable imperial porter; I feel that there is considerable complexity that will appease those that are jaded with the typical porters (and even imperial porters) that are on the market. From the beginning to the end, Ironwood provides imbibers with a perfect blend of hops, malt, chocolate, and the more intense elements of coffee and mocha.
Phoenix Ale has hit it out of the park with Ironwood; check out their website for more information about their efforts (they go into a level of detail that is unparalleled), their taproom, and the way to get in contact with the company.
