Texas-based husband and wife worship duo Tyler & Bailey Dodds released their new EP, “Songs for the Church,” today. While they were hopeful that the songs would find an audience beyond their home church, they never expected a runaway hit. But that’s what they received earlier today, when the album shot straight to #1 at iTunes in the Christian & Gospel category, sharing the Top 10 with such heavyweights as For King & Country, Marvin Sapp and Hillsong United.
“We simply wanted to allow our church body to continue worship outside the walls of our church,” says Tyler, who serves as the worship pastor at Stonegate Fellowship in Midland, Texas, where Bailey also regularly leads in worship. “When this record debuted at #1 on the Christian and Gospel charts today, we were blown away by the response. The original title was ‘Songs for our Church’ but right before we finished it, we changed ‘our’ to ‘the.’ We see now that God had another plan and that He would connect us to so many more people that would connect with His truth.”
Since picking up a guitar in Mississippi at the age of 10 and teaching himself how to play, Tyler has found himself used by God in many different ways. In his teens, Tyler traveled the country leading worship for countless youth events. He also began to pursue his love for studio recording and producing, including his 2008 debut album, “This is Not Our Home.” In 2009, Tyler went on staff at Stonegate Fellowship as a worship pastor and felt called to focus his entire ministry on the local church. Over the past 4 years, God has quietly been growing and shaping Tyler and Bailey as they learned how to write together, be “stationary,” and began to raise a young family.
The result is “Songs for the Church” – a collection of songs Tyler and Bailey have been leading on simple Sunday mornings with their congregation. Tyler produced and recorded, played every instrument, and mixed and mastered the album in a studio set up in a converted shed in the Dodds’ backyard.
