Fried Goat Interview

Let’s look at the elephant in the room – why Fried Goat?

Our first bass player was from Bulgaria and he was telling us all the different foods that are popular there. Just about every other dish was some kind of goat. I’m not sure frying goat is one of the more popular ways to prepare it but it should be. Everything tastes better fried.

Your latest album is 2014’s Fried Goat. What did the creative process look like from initial thought to finished song?

Everybody in the band writes songs so we had a good bit written soon after our first album (Bon Appetit) was released in 2011. Once the songs are written and presented to the rest of the band we’ll work together to get the arrangement down. Then we record together initially but mostly just trying to get the drum tracks down. Once the drums are done we add all the other instruments, vocals, etc. Then we mixed it and got it mastered.

What is your favorite track on the album? What makes it memorable?

That changes every time I listen but lately I’ve been digging ‘Guilt Trip’. It has some cool tempo and key changes that I like. Great ending too.

What does your live set up look like? Would there be any sort of gear that would be a major “get” for the band?

5 people are in the band and the set up is mostly drums, 2 electric guitars, 1 acoustic guitar, bass. A few songs have mandolin too. I’d like another couple of Les Pauls and Flying V! That would be a major ‘get’.

How’s the Georgia hard rock and metal scene, and what differences have you seen in other area’s hard and heavy scenes?

Georgia has a great music scene for all types of music. Most people think of Athens and Atlanta but Augusta, Macon, Savannah, etc. all produce really good musicians. There are some really good hard rock bands in the state. As far as ‘Metal’ I know Mastodon is really popular and they’re from Atlanta. I doubt this is just unique to Georgia but most the musicians I know like to play all kinds of genres and we’re no different – hard rock, metal, country, pop, blues – and I think there’s some of all of that on the record.

What are the primary musical influences of Fried Goat?

Everyone in the band has different tastes but some that we probably all agree are The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Black Sabbath, Neil Young, Rolling Stones, REM
